Has anyone seen this yet?

I hadn't heard anything about it but a guy in my office told me it was great so I did some research and it's getting insane reviews. Currently the best reviewed movie of 2009 on metacritic with some claiming it as "the best movie made yet about the war in Iraq". Also currently getting 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Quote:
The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad, who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and each other as they seek out and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad -- in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear - protect and save - but it’s anything but easy, for the margin of error on a war-zone bomb is zero. A thrilling and heart-thumping look at the effects of combat and danger on the human psyche, The Hurt Lockeris based on the first-hand observations of journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal, who was embedded with a special bomb unit in Iraq.

Sounds like they cast relative newcomer actors to give it a "no movie stars" feel (also so you won't know who dies I suppose).

What also piqued my interest is that it was directed and produced by Kathryn Bigelow who wrote and directed POINT BREAK.

Yeah, I've read the reviews and really want this to open wide. The trailer is insane.

Definitely want to see it. The Ultimate Trailer Show has shown it once or twice. Actually saw a preview on the big screen for it recently. Looks good.

Yeah, how about that?

I've been wanting to see it for a while and was hoping I'd have a chance this week.

Between this and Moon, I really need to get my ass over to the Tara and see some quality flicks, no more of this summer movie crap*.

*That is until I get the chance to go see Harry Potter and G.I.Joe. ;)

Heard about it on All Things Considered. Sounds great. I'll be sure to catch it when it expands screenings.

Saw it Sunday and was really impressed. Was also impressed that some family tried to bring their two toddlers in to see it... lol luckily someone warned them and they left. It's violent and bloody.

It's funny it's being marketed as art house film but it's a ton of action. I'd say it joins "Tulpan", "Three Monkeys" and "Medicine For Melancholy" as one the four best films I have seen so far this year. The only problem I had is it follows a three man unit and every scene boiled down to them. They'd go on these calls where there are a ton of soldiers, but it would always boil down to those three solving it.

So I went and saw this Saturday and was mildly disappointed.

Not sure if I was expecting too much based on the reviews or what but I didn't think it quite lived up to billing. Maybe critics are just starved for a quality movie this time of year.

That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it though. Certainly it was expertly done but I just thought that the common themes in it have all been explored before and just as good if not better.

Themes of war is hell, the psyche on a soldier, war being a drug, the monotony of war, etc. I think those have been explored before in Jarhead and the HBO's series Generation Kill.

There are certainly some intense, edge of your seat moments but for me some parts were just cliche. Soldier breakdowns. Irrational behavior. I don't know. Some of it just seemed forced, especially when it starts to examine the relationship among the team members.

Maybe I just expected too much. Still, solid movie that I'm probably being to harsh on. Certainly worth a matinee.

Solid, solid film but not the movie of the year or anything. Still, it's not your typical summer fare.

Saw it last night and I agree 100% with Derris.

It was good, but I think I was more engrossed in Black Hawk Down than this film. And Three Kings is still the recent benchmark for movies concerning this subject matter for me. This one didn't come close.

[POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT]

I found the cameos interesting. I wonder if it was simply the director calling in a favor, interest from Pearce and Fiennes, or both. I am also curious if it was done on purpose so that the viewer wouldn't immediately suspect the characters were going to get blown to bits.
