We have an old saying at Matador HQ, "the only thing predictable about Yo La Tengo albums is their high level of excellence and crazy amount of musical ground covered". Trouble is, even if you believe we really have an old saying that unwieldly, it doesn't really do justice in this instance. The new Yo La Tengo CD/2XLP/digital album 'Popular Songs" (OLE 856-1,2) could be the bravest musical statement to date in a career full of 'em. Recorded in Hoboken and Nashville in early 2009 with longtime associate Roger Mountenot, 'Popular Songs' finds the trio of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew at the height of their creative powers, fashioning an epic work that's cooly confident as it is wildly adventurous.

YAY!!!!!
I think that their last album (I Am Not Afraid of You...) is among their best. So, I am really looking forward to this new one.

Sweet.

I really like that Condo Fucks album a lot, btw. More people should give that a shot.

This is one of my all-time favorite bands and this is great news. But even as much as I love Ira and Georgia, "wildly adventurous" could mean it's something unlistenable. Love the cover... hippies... ouija board... anyone remember cassettes left in a hot car.... tape melts and stretches...

I haven't listened to that last album since it first came out. I should probably give it another shot but I recall being profoundly disappointed by it. Actually, to be fair I should probably reclassify myself as a casual fan because I really only like about three of their albums through and through.

This is a band i haven't fully delved into. I really enjoy I Can Hear The Heart.., and Electr-O-Pura, but the last one they released as well as Summer Sun didn't really click for me.

I like these guys, but I'll usually just reach for a song rather than a whole record of their stuff.

The last song off that last record was great.

I just d/l it from indie passion, I will most likely give my two cents tomorrow.

Hmm...the first 9 tracks are mostly quite strong (definitely better than almost all of "Summer Sun" and some of "I Am Not Afraid..." IMO) but YLT chose to end the album with three lengthy songs that don't really go anywhere. I'll give it a B+ for now.
