Anyone donate to a charity to sponsor a child? I think for this upcoming year I'd like to put some money towards that initiative. Right now this is the frontrunner company:

Compassion International

They are rated 4-stars by charity navigator, so my money isn't going to be used elsewhere, and I've read and heard some great stories from them.

Any input?

I sponsor the shit out of a child from Children International. They've been really good about keeping me in contact with young Reynaldo and giving me updates on his actual life.

Nice. Though, I do find it interesting that you can sponsor a child in the US when as a country we have so many outlets set up for that kind of thing either through gov't programs or community programs.

Yeah, give them money so they can shove Jesus down the kid's throat. No thanks.

If you had a bad experience with a church, I'm sorry. I really am. Probably whatever you encountered has absolutely nothing to do with what Jesus stood for. Just because an organization is aligned with a religious organization doesn't make them evil. The organization is question has a high-charity rating, and obviously cares about the child's well-being.

Guys, charity begins at home. I have 3 girls who need to eat as much as any African. I will send pictures and daily reports. Make checks payable to the kingfish children relief fund. Thanks.

On a previous computer's links, I had a website thtat tracked total dollars given to the cause for a charity, versus "overhead", for charities soliciting money.. it was amazing that many of them were at the 50% or much worse on actually getting the money to where it was intended.

Tread carefully and do your research... But it's definitely a good thing if you do your homework and make sure it's legit. Start with your local homeless shelter or Salvation Army.

Definitely, and I already give locally--both money and time. I just want to expand what I can do.

I was looking for the picture of that fat black dude wearing a football helmet and ready to devour a burger bigger than the size of his head but couldn't find it.

I found this looking for it though
