I am considering going there this coming June for the World Cup and was curious if anyone had any advice or just comments on where to go and what to do.

My only real apprehension is the long ass flight.

You really think you can find a room at this point?

I mean, you're kind of competing with the world on that end.

A trip to Africa is certainly on my short list. I'd want to go to South Africa first. Not necessarily because I want to go to Johannesburg or Cape Town but it seems like the best jumping off point to head north.

My only reservations have been from simply the unknown. Meaning, I would love to do a Safari but how does one really know which are the good, safe, and respectable ones and which ones will dump you off in the middle of jungle battle between warring tribes?

Kind of like my apprehension of EASL teaching jobs in Korea.

I checked availability at a few places and yeah...but I'll probably need to pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

Limpopo Game Preserve is pretty neat, way up north on the border with Zim. Drakensberg Mountains, southeast of Joburg, are spectacular. The coast around Durban is terrific (I stayed at Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban). Terrific country, wonderful people, especially outside the major metropolitan areas.

My ex-boss is going in the spring, before the Cup. I'm pretty sure he scored a solid deal.

I really need to get there sometime soon. A friend and her husband live in Nairobi and EVERYONE I know who's traveled anywhere in Africa has raved about it. Will obviously wait until after the World Cup, but yeah, this sounds pretty damn attractive.

Have 2 close friends who are now into their second year of teaching english in Korea. They love it. What apprehensions do you have? Afraid of getting shot in the street with a nuke?

I've met the woman who owns this outfit, and her daughter is good friends with one of my sisters. Not sure, but I thought this was one of the few companies that goes to Elsamere.

I've posted about this before but right after I graduated college I looked long and hard at doing it in Korea. I emailed some people that I was referred to that had done it in the past and heard some horror stories. Stuff like if it didn't work out, they cut you off and wouldn't pay for you to get back home. The hours were different, the schools were in really bad parts of Seoul, etc.

When I emailed and called the organization I was to work for, the whole thing was very vague and they weren't very clear about what was expected. I had ZERO experience teaching and they didn't care. The whole process was extremely sketchy. They weren't very clear about pay and how the pay would be done, etc. I had tons of questions like any reasonable person has when possibly moving half way around the world to work in a country that I can't speak the language in. Just didn't feel comfortable with any of it.

I was in northern Uganda (Gulu) all last month and I've been in Rwanda since the beginning of this month and I love it. I would highly recommend it, but make sure to travel outside of South Africa.
