Great article on Doc Ellis. Truly one of kind, and has great comments on Barry Bonds. For those who don't know, Ellis threw a no no while trippin

quote from the article:

Ellis would frequently drop acid on off days and weekends; he had a room in his basement christened "The Dungeon," in which he'd lock himself and listen to Jimi Hendrix or Iron Butterfly "for days."

A bit later, how long exactly he can't recall, he came across Mitzi flipping through a newspaper. She scanned for a moment, then noticed something.

"Dock," she said. "You're supposed to pitch today."

Ellis focused his mind. No. Friday. He wasn't pitching until Friday. He was sure.

"Baby," she replied. "It is Friday. You slept through Thursday."

Awesome. Me, I would have been seeing like 17 catcher's mitts to pitch to.

and Bill Mazerowski perhaps?

And the Willie Stargel "We Are Family" painters-cap Pirates?

Damn, in retrospect Pittsburgh has a great championship pedigree. Much better than Philly*, eh?

Eight bases-on-balls in a no-hitter? Eight allowed on base by walk, plus one hbp, and the Padres could not make anything of the game?

Combine that with Burnett's no-hitter three decades later, and the San Diego franchise is quite embarrassing. At least they did not lose two no-nos to tripping pitchers, though. Burnett's a wild-man, but I don't think he is dropping acid, before games.

But, that is also a sad thing: does baseball have anymore like this? Maybe Rickey (who prolly has dabbled in coke, but who in 80s MLB did not, but not hallucinogens, I would think; he's crazy, naturally), but he has been shunted to the Golden Baseball League. Who else?

The one who seems most Ellis like, among the current professional class of athletes, is A.I. I would probably throw Rasheed in there too. But where is the American stranger in the American game? Will there ever be another Space-man, or even Bird (Dontrelle does not count)?

This is terrible.

1976 FLYERS

are all i need to say.

but yeah, Pittsburgh's got a better great sports legacy. than like every other city in this country that doesn't have multiple teams for each sport.

1976 FLYERS

I just saw the Simpsons Halloween episode where the startling line serves on the jury for Homer's soul vs. the doughnut. "I'm smarter than the devil... I'm smarter than the devil..."

And of course, they make cool shirts and shit.

I don't know shit about baseball so when I saw Doc Ellis Band I only thought of a local country band called the Doc Ellis Band. Now I know where they got their name. Oh, and Doc Ellis band is pretty damn good actually with such hits as She's Drinkin' for Two, about a pregnant chick at the bar.

It should be noted that Todd Snider put out the best song of 2009 about Doc Ellis in "America's Favorite Pastime".
