I've been planning on formatting my hd and doing a fresh install for a couple weeks now and haven't got around to it. Now windows 7 is out and I dunno if I should put vista back on my machine or if I should try one of the copies of windows 7 that seem to be all over mininova right now.

anyone running 7 yet?

I sent away for my free upgrade that I got when I bought my laptop, but I probably won't get it for a couple of weeks.

I run ubuntu on my wife's laptop and XP on our desktop and my work laptop. Ubuntu's pretty sweet for generic stuff.

There is a lot of software that is written for Windows that is not available for Linux, just like there's a lot of software for Windows that's not available for OS X, and vice versa. But there is software to do anything you need to do.

One man's opinion:

Q: I'm thinking seriously about upgrading to Windows 7 when it comes out this month. Is the new operating system that much better than Windows Vista, which is what I now have? Also, what will it cost?

A: In a word, yes, it is significantly better than Vista. I don't think Vista was as bad as its reputation would imply, but it was a step backward from Windows XP, and for that reason alone, it was a failure.

With Windows 7, which will be released Oct. 22, Microsoft has regained its footing. The new system is a pleasure to use - and a lot more in sync with users' needs. For example, the taskbar at the bottom of the screen has been completely redesigned. When you click a taskbar icon for a running program, thumbnails appear for all of the program's open windows (documents, Web pages, even video). Point your mouse at one of the thumbnails, and it will expand to fill the screen.

Windows 7 boasts a number of improvements, including the best backup program in Microsoft history; a Media Center that's a top-notch DVR for recording TV; easier-to-use wireless networking for notebooks; and a security scheme that lets you cut down on the irritating warnings you get in Vista.

The only disappointing aspect about Windows 7 is the price - $120 for the Home Premium upgrade. I was hoping Microsoft would price it at half that to make amends for Vista.

I'm gonna try out Ubuntu on VirtualBox for now to see how I like it, as I've gotten pretty sick of Vista recently.

From what I understand, you can't run Adobe programs on Linux.

But those aren't essential for a lot of people.

I really, really want Windows 7. XP 64 is almost as bad as Windows 98, IMO.

Which is why I'm stuck with windows and not trying Linux.

If you're not in a financial position to purchase the full version of windows 7/Live a life of hacking and pirating:

My friend installed this cracked copy of Windows 7. I wanted to wait for him to do it first to be sure it's safe before I format and install it. He's had it running for 3 weeks now without a problem. It's cracked perfectly and operates like the fully purchased copy (updates via windows update, etc). I'm almost done backing up all my music and pictures and then I'm jumping from Vista to 7. Can't wait. Sick of Vista and hear nothing but great things about 7.

That's cool, but I'm talking about my work machine. They'll buy that shit for me eventually. Once they'd had enough of my complaining.

I'm still running a Mac at home, but I think it's the last one I'll ever buy. They become less and less worth the price difference with each passing year, IMO, if they ever truly were.

You can run it off a live CD without installing it on your computer. That could be kind of slow though, so a better option is to run it off a USB drive. You can use UNetbootin to download and install Ubuntu onto a USB drive (1 GB should be fine), then just restart your computer with the USB drive plugged in.

I just did it, and to my shock and amazement, it works! I am actually on the USB-run Ubuntu right now.

Just hooked up our brand, spankin new computer. Comes with it. As I figure this puppy out I'll speak up on Windows 7. I'm excited to have something updated.

Our system was so outdated it wasn't even funny. Creating documents became a joke.
