so, my dad was just diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer. im not sure which stage, there is still more testing to be done.

needless to say, the family is more than a bit shook up. this here's a thread i thought would make a good place to post shit about it. if anybody's got any experience with this or have relatives who have, feel free to post in here.

and go ahead and post the funny shit if you feel the need. sometimes a good laugh is what we need in all this

thanks

I've had way too much experience with this shit the past couple years. Two good friends dead, and my sister's going through the same thing as your dad right now.

Not much to say about it though. It sucks and isn't very funny.

Damn, Jon. I am really sorry to hear this news. I have also had way too much experience with cancer to find anything about it funny.

But, take it from a guy who has been living with MS for the last 15 years and who survived brain surgery: a positive attitude does go a really long way.

It may sound like the most trite thing imaginable, but it is far from it. That attitude helps you (especially the patient) get through those long, hard days of testing and feeling like shit. Also, if prayer is what you are into... that doesn't hurt either.

I hope that everything shakes out on the plus side for you and your family.
Speaking of prayers: you, your dad, and your family will be in mine.

I have no experience with this type of cancer, but I'm sorry to hear this, toots. As someone who also has dealt with the ups and downs of cancer with my own father's health, I understand your desire for information, advice, etc.

Sending good thoughts.

Well keep us posted on what you find out, eh? If they caught it early enough, maybe it won't be so bad. (well, as unbad as colo-rectal cancer can be)

First off, I'm sorry to hear that Jon. But keep your head up, and be as positive and happy as you can possibly be when you're around your father. Whatever his interests are, try and have him focus on that, and not on the cancer. In other words, if he's an avid reader, bring him some new books. He can beat this.

Secondly, my mother passed away from lung cancer in 2003. Hands down the toughest thing I've ever had to go through. The American Cancer Society was my source of info. Read up on his type as much as you can, and look for alternative medicines, not just in the sates, but everywhere.

Hit me up with any questions you have brother.

sorry to hear about this. This type of cancer runs very heavily in my family. My grandmother was diagnosed in '88 and given six months to live. She passed away in '99...at 76 and lived a great happy 11 years (and died at a normal age)

It's very treatable. But difficult. Happy thoughts for you!

Twice, Rads.

No, seriously, Toots and Rads, that sucks. My father-in-law just had surgery for prostate cancer, and doing pretty well so far. But it has been rough, especially on my wife and mother-in-law. Just keep your chin up and be there for your family when they need you.

Let's get this thread back on track, quick.

Toots, I hope things turn out best for your dad.
Rads, I am sorry to hear about your sister. Hope things turn out as well as they can.

Sorry to hear about that, Jon. Definitely prayers going out for you guys as you go through it.

My grandma has something similar right now. She's been bleeding pretty badly from her rectum for the past month. She starts today (ironically) radiation. She's 97 though. My mom called me yesterday to let me know that its definitely moving forward. I guess they're just trying to stop the growth from growing and completely closing her up. Based on people I know who've gone through radiation (who were in relatively good health), I don't expect her to live out the year. I'm just hoping that it isn't around the holidays because that's when my grandpa died. It'd be really rough on my mom if both her parents died in December.

Definitely no fun. I've had to deal with a close friend getting breast cancer this year and then her marriage falling apart. Cancer is wicked.

Jon and Rads, i'd like to give you both full frontal hugs, not Christian side hugs.

I'm a good friend like that.
