i liked it but just thought the jokes weren't as good and the genre they were making fun of had already been done before. i was less emotionally invested in it too.

I agree with this. I think that part of it may be that Shaun of the Dead was more interesting because it was the first thing I saw by them so it seemed more original. Also the ending to Hot Fuzz didn't do it for me.

The ending of Hot Fuzz is what made the movie. It wasn't a typical joke-after-joke comedy but rather one that built up to one big joke.
