Ok so I figured I would post this here in order to have an online record. Feel free to add, comment etc. I started in 1950 (should have gone back to the mid 40s, will backtrack later) and once I hit the mid-sixties, Im spending a week on each year, or at least that is the plan.

I started with the Billboard Top 30; adding other charts and lists I found along the way -

Songs listened to, (* for notables) and some comments.

Ok quite a list of songs- what isn't evident from the list is that the charts at this time reflect "songs" just as much as artists. That is, there are songs that find themselves on the charts in 1950 having being done by more than one (or two) artists. For instance - Tennessee Waltz, Count Every Star, Sentimental Me, Mona Lisa, Dearie, Bonaparte's Retreat, Rap Mop, I Wanna Be Loved, My Foolish Heart and the list goes on and on.

1952
Year:1952

Under some songs there are snippets of allmusic quotes - that I found helpful. And because I am lazy, I've left them in.

* Have Mercy- Billy Ward & The Dominoes
* Mint Julep- The Clovers
My Song- Johnny Ace
Goin' Home- Fats Domino
* Moody's Mood For Love- King Pleasure w/ Blossom Dearie
Along with Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure was one of the early masters of vocalese -- a style in which lyrics are written and sung to the solos of jazz instrumentalists. Although Pleasure cited Jeffersonas his main influence and said that Jefferson was embracing vocalese before him, Pleasure's sax-like phrasing and scat singing proved equally influential.

*Juke- Little Walter

* Night Train- Jimmy Forrest
Baby Don't Do It- The 5 Royales
* Mad About You- Dinah Washington
Ill never Get Out of this World Alive- Hank Williams

* I Dont Know- Willie Mabon
* I Believe- Elmore James
Rock the Joint- Billy Haley & the Saddlemen
High Noon - Frankie Laine
* La Mauvaise Reputation - Georges Brassens
One of French pop's most poetic songwriters, Georges Brassens, was also a highly acclaimed and much-beloved performer in his own right. Not only a brilliant manipulator of language and a feted poet in his own right, Brassens was also renowned for his subversive streak, satirizing religion, class, social conformity, and moral hypocrisy with a wicked glee.

Percy Faith was one of the most popular easy listening recording artists of the '50s and '60s. Not only did he have a number of hit albums and singles under his own name, but Faith was responsible for arranging hits by Tony Bennett, Doris Day, Johnny Mathis, and Burl Ives, among others, as the musical director for Columbia Records in the '50s.

LOVE that Ravens song/version. Gotta bust out some Louis and Hank sometime soon. Am I correct in thinking Hank had a lot of posthumous hits?

my wife are embarking on a project to watch all of the AFI Top 100. I was thinking of making a thread but I'm a pretty mediocre review writer (especially for film); might do it anyway just to spurn some discussion.

cool idea. i've been thinking of doing a similar thing with film

my wife are embarking on a project to watch all of the AFI Top 100. I was thinking of making a thread but I'm a pretty mediocre review writer (especially for film); might do it anyway just to spurn some discussion.

I watched most of these one summer. Pretty cool, still some holes I've got to fill. To wit: Never got around to Annie Hall.

It will take us forever because the AFI film is going to take the "every other movie" slot usually reserved for some terrible documentary I want to see or some equally terrible chick flick she wants to see (or, sadly, vice versa). Plus we are going into it knowing that some of these movies will be openly terrible.
