The Velvet Underground's Lou Reed, Moe Tucker and Doug Yule staged a rare reunion in New York on Tuesday (December 8) to take part in a question and answer session.

The talk took place at the New York Public Library in front of a live audience, and at one point saw Reed hail Tucker as the greatest drummer he has ever worked with.

Watch fan-recorded video footage of the event by scrolling down now.

"I've tried since then to get a drummer to do what she did, and it's impossible. They can't," Reed said, reports BBC Radio 4's Today Programme. "If we sped up, she sped up. Instead of having a drummer who'll sit there trying to hold the beat down, our songs speed up and slow down all over the place."

Reed also admitted that the only reason the band got noticed at the start of their career was because people thought Warhol – who managed and 'adopted' them – was a member.

"Warhol was one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life," Reed explained. "Without him, [The Velvet Underground were] kind of inconceivable. When they hired us to make a record it wasn't because of us, it was because of him. They didn't know us – they thought he was the lead guitarist or something!"

There's definitely truth in the Warhol as the catalyst comment. I've thought about that before as to whether VU would've gotten noticed on their own accord, without Warhol. I've also wondered if their first record wasn't with Nico, but rather their second or third how they would've been accepted.

I've often wondered how they would've been accepted if Lou Reed had been half goat/half monkey, and with chair coasters instead of feet.

some of my coworkers went to this, I wish I knew! They are doing a whole report of it today on WNYC's Soundcheck - I know they have a podcast if you want to check it out.

I actually see Lou Reed around all the time. It's sort of crazy. (commence bashing)

He's prolly been "on-set" with Belladonna, too.

Ha paled around with Warhol's factory crew, dated a tranny and shot boatload of dope. I don't think weird should come as a surprise.

Oddly, that doesn't seem too far off from what I imagine a wild party at the Factory would be like. Goatkey people, and chair coaster coast-offs.
