there is a huge world of music that i would have never known about had i not heard it in rap songs first and then explored. And all of those bands opened me up to other bands and so on and so on.

and i still learn all the time this way.

and not just funk and soul, but all sorts of things.

yeah me too. prince paul is probably the most to blame. most of the stuff that premier or diamond d used i would have gotten to (or near) eventually anyway, although some of that pete rock lite-jazz stuff (how he coaxed beats out of some of these things is beyond me) i could have been ok never hearing.

yeah, i have more smooth jazz than i probably should - but sometimes there is that one break that is amzing that makes it worth while.

those "Shaolin Soul" comps are the same way, so completely milquetoast that i'm amazed that that got permutated into these thug-rap anthems. also, pretty much my entire knowledge of classic rock came this way as i have no older siblings and never smoked pot in groups.

the drumming and bass on early smooth jazz is amazing, it's the brass and keyboards that end up messing it up most of the time.

and while a lot of the groundwork was laid when i wa a teenager, dj shadow proved to me that absolutely everything could be turned into anything else and that set me off on the hunt for a few years.

the saxaphone is probably the most abused instrument in the recorded age.

Post of the day

Agree here. Hip Hop & Trip Hop opened up a world of music by researching the sampling
