Some more music that is "tentozian - adverb, describing earnest acoustic folk and/or country music with very little variance in tempo or execution", as Dr. Radcliffe pigeonholes it. Got blown away by this on the Greenville NPR station this afternoon, never heard of them before. The website streams 3 songs. THEM playing traditional Negro jugband/ string music. NO variation in tempo or execution, dontcha know.

I like it. I'm going to see Steve Earle tonight. so I'm definitely in the mood for "country music with very little variance in tempo or execution".

These guys have been working the bluegrass/old-time circuit for a little while. I was supposed to see them play around here 2 years ago, but was sick. Their last record got some definite attention. I think they have a new record coming out?

Yeah, I think Paste had them as one of their "bands to watch" in 2007. I've been meaning to check 'em out for a while now. I know they've played with the Avett Brothers in the past.

At first I thought that they'd kicked the old guy out of the band but after doing some google-izing it turns out that the genesis of the band started when they began playing around North Carolina with Joe Thompson.

He's apparently 90 years old and one of the last traditional African-American banjo/string players around. The reason I found it strange was because when they first started getting attention he was in their band photos. Guess he can't really get around much though.

Here's an early photo of them:

Apparently many of their early songs are all his. Respect for that.

Also, Toze, did you get a chance to hear The Gourds "Haymaker" from last year?

I really liked it. Their best album IMO. Great ballads combined with some upbeat stuff in the country rock vein but also some down home zydeco type stuff.
