I've done it again.

Just when you thought Hegel would lurk in the background and not make any more Epic Life FAILs, he goes and posts on Facebook from work about his miserable job and having a hard time focusing because he was too stuck thinking about his imminent graduation. Apparently one of my "friends" showed it to my boss who told me that the VP of the undergrad school wanted me fired on the spot but I just had to go "clear your head for the rest of the afternoon and come back tomorrow".

Haha. I am gone in a month though anyway, so this gets one giant "MEH".

I am sure Rads, Rodney and Gar are gonna have a field day with this in Chatzy, etc. Just promise me that you'll wait to make the better jokes until I can stop by and hear them myself.

K Thx.

:)

I know I'm old fashioned but I don't approve of getting sacked via Facebook.

You should be doing it through shoddy attitude, late coming, poor quality of work and openly fractious relations with your superiors.

I understand completely why this is good advice for most people. That said, I am lucky to work for people who understand the Internet, have no interest in snooping on my comings and goings online, and respect my autonomy and privacy. I realize that I may not have the luxury of a choice, but I will try very hard to avoid any job that doesn't have similar policies.

Agreed. At my last job when you would go to get on the internet it would take you to the company's internal home page. This page had all our public documents, shared forms, contacts, etc and from there you could get on to the internet.

On that home page there was literally an IT tab that you could go to and see internet usage. It would have the top 10 people who were on the internet the previous day and how much they were on it. Then it would list the top 50 sites that were accessed the previous day, etc, etc. My boss would look at it everyday and use it as some sort of scare tactic to let us know that we were being watched.

Fucking ridiculous. If I'm not doing my job, fine, but if I am who gives a shit how much I'm on the net?

Needless to say, to hell with that place. I'm glad I'm not there anymore.

I wonder how much they would respect your autonomy if you started saying, "my boss sucks and my works sucks" on the internet. Good for you if they do - let me know where I can send my resume.

my work is really lax on internet use. they pretty much dont care what site you are on or when youre on it as long as youre getting your shit done. i guess im just more paranoid about putting specific personal information on such a huge site like facebook. and my boss is my facebook friend, so im never saying anything about work up on there

I just wrote a post for my company blog detailing why people should use Facebook MORE and not less. I work for myself, but I have clients. Its about professionalism - you wouldn't show up to see a client in flip flops and and a wife beater - so don't post crazy shit on your feed.

But there is no more captive audience to promote yourself or your company to.

Yeah I don't talk about work much (if at all) on the FB. And if I did, it'd be positive.

There's your biggest thing...Although it is too late now, but never have any work superiors as friends on these social networking sites....god forbid a friend posts embarassing pictures and tags you in them...too many ways to get busted on stuff....but it is probably impossible to remove him from your friend list at this point....

but, i think there is a privacy section in your account settings, where you can possibly block him from seeing stuff you post, and he still remains your friend...

nah, theres really nothing to worry about. this is a small, laid back company and this guy is cool as hell and goes out with us all the time. theres probably more to bust him on than me. and i make sure that anything damning isnt hidden/deleted entirely. but yeah in any other situation i wouldnt have him on there

You can remove the tags when people tag you in a photo...if you notice...and if you can do it before coworkers see it.
