I really can't see the need for 10 nominations, especially when they start throwing out shit like The Blind Side (which will probably win, btw)

It's because Hollywood just HAS to be loved. After last years Indie-fest they got scared they were alienating the "Transformers" crowd.

I don't know why they don't do this for Best Foreign Language movie (re: extend to 10 films). Seems like they wouldn't have much trouble finding 10 quality films and they would at least get some much deserved attention. (35 Shots of Rum and Broken Embraces should've been included)

I'll be pulling Jeff Bridges to get the Best Actor. I think he's got some pretty good competition from Firth but this might be the year he gets the "career" Oscar nod. Not to mention he's great in Crazy Heart.

After all the great movies nominated last year this year feels kind of like a let down. Avatar might be the drunk asshole at the party this year tearing up the place.

Jeremy Renner
Carey Mulligan
Christoph Waltz
Mo'Nique (!)

Katheryn Bigelow

Inglorious Basterds

(Two of these might win. Well, will win. I expect Sandra Bullock (should be disqualified from any awards consideration for five years, after that All 'bout Steve fiasco) & James Cameron to fuck shit up, though.)

Of every category she has to be the lock of the year.

I honestly didn't think "Precious" was as good as some did but she was just incredible. Ruthless.

I'll admit that I enjoyed the Blind Side. But that has more to do with not having a heart of cold stone in this chest and less to do with it being a good movie. I'm shocked that it got a single nomination. They should probably just go ahead and give the award to Micheal Oher for having such a shitty life and not being a murder/rapist.

No shit. The movie could have just as easily been marketed as "Wes Anderson directs a script from Tyler Perry".

LOMIT.

Mo is incredible though. Almost as awesome as her sucking face with Jurgen Prochnow at the end of Beerfest.

agreed. this is a two-horse race. a single man is the first time i've really been impressed with firth. he was magnificent in that role.

Glad for D9, though I wish it was Moon that got that nom.

I agree with upping the foreign language to 10 as well. Every year there are deserving pics that get overlooked because of some stodgy old ruling. Though, thats pretty much across the board at the Oscars.

Also, how can Up be in best animation and best picture? Wouldn't a best picture nomination by default make it the best animated feature? There should be a rule against that. Isn't there a rule that if you go for best foreign language you can't be best pic? Or vice versa?

Don't know about the rules, but I think it would be fair considering it could win best animated feature and not win best picture.

I thought District 9 was a much better film than Moon.

Those are the last two movies I have seen, and I much rather watch District 9 again than sit through Moon.
It wasn't a bad film, I was just left underwhelmed by how they clone premise. It had great visuals and Sam Rockwell does a fine job in it, I just thought they skimmed through some storyline aspects that could have included for high drama.

no, there is no rule like that. i think the last time a foreign film was up for best picture was life is beautiful. and i also believe this is only the second time an animated film has been up for best picture.

this would be like saying you can't be up for album of the year at the grammys if you're also up for best r&b album.

Also, no way in hell that The Blind Side wins Best Picture.

True, but I really thought there was a rule of some sort (maybe it was repealed), because last year or the year before there was talk as to whether or not to go after a "sure thing" in a specialized category or to put all in, and go for Best Picture.

*edit* guess I'm dreaming things because, yeah Life Is Beautiful won Best Foreign Language, but lost Best Picture.

Kinda weird that Cameron and Katheryn Bigelow are both best director nominations in the same year.

it's a little like william powell and carole lombard being nominated for best actor and best actress for the same movie, even though they were divorced by then.

Hurt Locker wasn't anything special. I liked it, but it's nothing that should win best picture.

no, it's not the best movie ever. but "nothing special"? this one stuck with me for a long time. that scene with the jack-in-the-box crushed me.
