I need some suggestions.

Have a friend getting more into this kinda thing. I've got plenty of older suggestions, but not real in touch lately. Anyone wanna throw out a select list of good stuff in this vein over the last couple years or anything just out?

I dont know how much 'alt' you want and how much 'country' you want, but:

Son Volt (more so than Uncle Tupelo or Wilco)
(Will Oldham) Palace Brothers / Palace / Palace Songs
Handsome Family
I second the Gillian Welch suggestion

I haven't been keeping up much on it either, and this may be a bit more folksy/Americana than you're looking for, but this is solid:

Some "NewGrass" (terrible name for a genre) music:
Old Crow Medicine Show:
http://www.crowmedicine.com/
If you have the chance to see them live, GO! One of the most-fun times that I've had at a concert (that wasn't The Pogues) in a long time

Woodbox Gang:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=149968
Carbondale, IL band that is along the same lines as OCMS. Also a lot of fun.

I heard the title cut off Slaid Cleaves' "Wishbone" that was pretty damn good. The other songs I've heard by him are pretty folk-y, tho. Don't know if this would work for you.

Couple more that no one's mentioned:

The Jayhawks

I second most everything in this thread, though. Elvis Perkins should be seen live.

Be sure to check out Glossary, too. They have a couple of albums on their website for free. In fact, they just released a new one this week. If anyone comes across a link for it...

The new Glossary is absolutely great...best of the young 2010 so far.

Also check out some Ryan Bingham, Texas Sapphires, Deer Tick, Richmond Fontainne, Lucero and DBT obviously, Chuck Mead, Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women, Hayes Carl, Drunk Stuntmen, Jason Isbell and 400 Unit.

Listening to Richmond Fontaine, who are absolutely great, but pretty unknown here in the states. Same with Grand Drive.

Here's some more that I dig:
Bottle Rockets
Old 97s
Scud Mountain Boys
Centro-Matic
Joe Ely
James McMurtry
Aztec Two-Step
Doc Watson
Robbie Faulks
The Drams (ex-Slobberbone)
Giant Sand
South San Gabriel
Autumn Defense
James Yorkston
John Prine
16 Horsepower
Lyle Lovett

Has anyone mentioned the Jayhawks? Rainy Day Music is pretty essential.

Thanks for the link. I went ahead and bought it from Lucero's site the other day. Great new album. I've been listening to their last couple of releases non-stop lately. Gotta catch 'em live now.
