The New Pornographers Come Together for New Album

The Matablog has announced that on May 4, Matador will release the fifth album from the indie-power-pop supergroup the New Pornographers, titled Together.

In addition to the core lineup of A.C. Newman (who wrote nine of the album's songs), Dan Bejar (who wrote three), Neko Case, John Collins, Kurt Dahle, Kathryn Calder, Todd Fancey, and Blaine Thurier, Together also features contributions from Beirut's Zach Condon, St. Vincent's Annie Clark, Okkervil River's Will Sheff, and the horn section from the Dap-Kings. Check out a bunch of photos from the album's recording sessions over on the New Pornographers website.

As previously reported, A.C. Newman will team up with Charles Bissell of the Wrens, the Old 97's Rhett Miller, and Nicole Atkins in a Seekers cover band for a one-off performance January 27 at a Haiti benefit at the Bell House in Brooklyn. Proceeds will go to Save the Children and Partners in Health.

The New Pornos continue to be a band I wish I liked. I can see the appeal, and it's the kind of music I can get behind. It seems well-crafted. But none of their songs ever do anything for me.

i don't know about this. i saw them two years ago without bejar and it was excellent. when they're really not worth seeing is when neko isn't singing. when ac newman's niece (or cousin, or whoever) played with them, the show was fine, but it wasn't the new pornographers i'd come to love.

Yeah, I've seen them four times (all w/ Neko, once w/ Bejar) and Bejar didn't make a huge difference for me - stumbled out, head pointed at the floor, did his thing, stumbled backstage until Newman called him out again. No big whoop.

But news of a new record makes me pretty durn excited. "This close" to being a pantheon-level band for me.

I LOVE Bejar when he plays with them...just gets drunk, creeps up for a few songs like someone's drunken uncle.

The show I saw with Bloor was the best, a 2 hour blinder with all the hits.

Agreed. Bejar MAKES the band. Without his songs, I wouldn't give the new porno's the time o' day.

They're one of those bands I really enjoy when I'm listening to them, but don't think about putting their discs on too often. That being said, I'm definitely interested.
