...doing the promo kit thing again after almost 10 years...

this is a cover of a song my grandad wrote in 1958 (7 Up and Whiskey - i posted the original a few months back)

it was recorded during that week in september i locked myself in the house with two jugs of bourbon, along with 3 other tunes. i'm trying to get it released somehow, but i wanted to put a track up here for all you music-smart peeps to scorn

7 Up is on some noisy Led Zep bro down tip. I like at 2:46 when it gets all chaotic.

cool. yeah i was thinking i might do a massive drum back up live, but i also intentionally limited myself during the session to a floor tom and a cymbal. and tambourine as a disadvantage exercise, of sorts.

I was thinking more White Stripes, but yeah, Zep is definitely a good ref. point. I like this a lot; nice, noisy, dirty-ass white boy blues thing.
And yeah, the titles are great.

I like the 7Up and Whiskey song, and I echo Todd's thoughts that it sounds a bit Jack White-ish to me.

i'll take the jack white vocal thing as a compliment, as i think he is an accomplished vocalist. i think the whole thing could stand to be dirtier even...like boredoms dirty

yeah, I meant it as a compliment. It's not just the vocals, it's the whole grittiness of the song and sound (see my Jack White NPR story thread, haha)

First off, this is very good
but do you want to make it better?

do you want the vocals to be a delivery or another instrument?
assuming the former and you're not a pussy*
you should take a couple layers off the distorted vocal track and bring it forward.

for emphasis/contrast, the solo 'chorused out' guitar shit level at should be brought up considerably:... in relation to the background musics..

..plus I would get rid of the guitar dickery after 0:10 seconds prior to the lyrics.
drone out what you have. pick scrapes are fine...

for the most part the content is fine, but the leveling needs much work.

in summary:
keep what you got.
but
i want the vocals louder
and the solos mildly louder
otherwise
...no complaints

being that i've had more experience being a songwriter than an engineer, your critique is pretty spot on.

i made the mistake of recording literally everything in the red which didn't give me much room to play with dynamics

lesson learned...
