Went to see an old and very good friend of mine (40+ years) play the other night- Longineu Parsons. He's a trumpeter, and a damned good one- played with Sun Ra and others over the years. Noticed he was blowing a cornet and thought it was strange, as the trumpet was always his instrument of choice. toward the end of the set, he explained- I knew Adderley had been his mentor, both musically and froma bidness perspective. After Nat died, his wife Ann invited Longineu to Lakeland to visit one weekend. She brought out Nat's cornet and told Longineu he was the only musician that could play it. So this is Longineu playing his much prized possession, Nat Adderley's cornet.

I dunno what is sweeter - the horn or the Nehru Jacket!

For the kids here, his son is also Longineu Parsons- the IV or the 12th, I can't remember, but he's the drummer for Yellowcard (not that I know much about them, or if they're still together)- LP, as he's known, played drums with Prince at his Super Bowl performance a few years ago. Unlike his old man, I understand he's a bit of a shithead.

I just noticed that he's playing with Nat Adderley Jr. at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood next month.

He gets around a little- actually doesn't gig too much anymore, at least when classes are going, he's a full- time music professor at Florida A&M University. Usually spends some part of every summer playing in Europe. If you have the chance, you should catch that show. I don't think you'd be disappointed- he's world class.
