AOL has an article about some of the worst customer service stories. Check this one out:

Quote:
Here is a story for you!

Several years ago, I purchased a Computer at Comp USA. I left the store, had lunch and changed my mind about it so I returned to the store to return it. I was in line for almost an hour. In front of me was an elderly Lady who must have been in her 70's. She was trying to exchange a $7 item for her grandson and the Manager was giving her such a hard time. He was rude, demanded ID, additional paperwork, etc... I could not believe how this young punk was treating this Lady and it really heated me up. When it was my turn, the Manager asked me what I wanted and the first thing I told him was how I could not believe that he treated an Elderly person so badly. The poor Lady was using a walker and you could tell that it was a great effort for her simply to be in that line for so long. The manager told me it wasn't any of my business. I replied "really"? and then handed him the computer box w receipt. He asked what was wrong with it and I said well as an experienced eye as your own can tell, the box hasn't even been opened. I then told him that I was going to exchange it but after seeing how people are dealt in his store, I was no longer interested in doing business with Comp USA and I was going to simply return it. He asked me for the receipt and I handed it to him. He told me he needed the original receipt (back then they gave you an original and duplicate) Since he was simply being an a-hole, I was not going to let him talk down to me and was not going to go back to my car to fish out the other receipt. He told me there was nothing he could do and rather than fulfil his "sense of power" I decided to simply go to another store (also Comp USA) and return it with both receipts. I asked him for his name and he asked "why". I told him I was going to report him to the Corporate office for mistreating customers. He told me he did not have to give me his name and refused. I went to a cashier, pointed to the guy and asked what his name was. Paper and pen in hand, I wrote it down as he watched.

I then went to another store, handed them the box with both receipts. The guy working customer service actually opened the box and had me waiting for almost 30 minutes. I asked what was taking so long and he said he had to check the contents. Next thing I know, I get tapped on my shoulder. I turned around and was confronted by 2 policemen asking if "I was the guy trying to return a computer". I responded "yes, and what is the problem"? They then asked me to put my hands behind my back "for my protection". I told them I felt plenty protected but of coarse they cuffed me. I asked them again what this was about and they told me I was being detained for "burglary". Burglary!!! LOL,,, They took me to Jail at which time I was interviewed by a detective. I explained the whole story to him and asked him "how is it even possible that you arrest me when I have the receipt of the item in my possesion along with the credit card used to purchase it which is in my name"? He told me that the original Manager posted a bulletin on Comp Usa's computer instructing all customer service reps to be on the lookout for someone named "my name" attempting to return a "stolen computer". The manager lied, and said that I walked into the store, picked up the computer and walked out. I told the detective it was untrue and simple to prove. Since the store has so many cameras, get the tape showing me in action and show it to me. The detective said ok and that he was going to contact the store and ask them for the tape. He returned in about 15 minutes and told me that the manager was too busy to do that right now. Yeah, no kidding!!! Of coarse!!! The bastard is too busy because he made up the whole thing.

So I spent 2 days in Jail (first time in my life with a perfectly clean record) I was then simply "relaesed". No I'm sorry, nothing!!! Man was I pissed!!!! I contatced my Attorney and immediately filed a Lawsuit for wrongful imprisonment due to false and malicious statements made by a Comp USA employee. The lawsuit was never allowed into the system. It was deemed "frivolous" and my Attorney was fined $5000 for attempting to file a frivolous lawsuit. WHAT???? How is this even possible???? So even at times when you are totally in the right, complaining to the wrong person can get you a few days of misery followed up by several years of supressed anger. I am totally against people shooting or killing one another in random acts of violence, but after my experience and what I went through, if I was a little psycho and would have given this manager a hell of a beating for what he did to me, I would probably think that some people would understand my anger. One day he will get "his", but it won't be from me. It would have felt good though!! I must admit!

Ah, my former employer. At my store, the Customer Service reps frequently "returned" non-existent merchandise for cash. Just two reasons why CompUSA recently folded.

Wow. After two days in jail, it sounds like someone hired the wrong lawyer to sue their asses.

PS: I find this article a bit dubious too.

I cannot picture you working at a CompUSA.

I'd have kept going into the store and taunting him.

Edit: I was a little disappointed to see them closing as there are only 2 computer stores in Cincinnati, one being a CompUSA and the other was Microcenter. Now it's just going to be Microcenter, who has cheaper stuff anyway.

This story sounds unbelievable....He was put in jail despite having a receipt and credit card proof that the computer in his possession was his and not stolen? There is either more to the story, or its B.S.

Can you picture me as 17 years old, a little chubby, and with a moptop? That should get you most of the way there.

NO. But I will begin trying immediately.

This explains so much.

Police are not tools, at least not of ridiculous corporations like CompUSA. I don't think there is any way that story is true.

I've had problems before to a magnitude that warranted a call to a regional or district manager. Most of the time, it gets straightened out, and a letter sent with an apology.

A lot of managers are cavalier until you say "district manager" to them, then they'll probably back down. I would say 9 out of 10 people with complaints don't use this. The manager thinks "who cares" if they call a 800 number. It'll be marked on a monthly memo, and forgotten. You call their superior, and its a direct action, they get the willies.

I'd also add that this story is probably BS. There are plenty of organizations/news/etc that would've chewed CompUSA up if this was actually true.

I agree. Bogus until proven otherwise.

I am glad CompUSA is closing. Worst customer service this side of India.

I just read an article in the NY Times about how CompUSA is back and has a few retail stores. Apparently a company called Systemax bought the name, website, and customer email list for $30 million and is resurrecting them. The same company also bought the same stuff from Circuit City for $14 million but have only got the website running so far. (Systemax is the company that owns TigerDirect.com.) Pretty interesting. I'm glad to see some competition coming back into the electronic market.

Although that story is dubious, you'd be surprised how many police actually enjoy arresting people out of boredom alone. And since the internal investigation process is so opaque that it's hard for an officer to be found negligent when they've done something serious like wrongfully beating someone up, them being reprimanded for peacefully detaining someone for dubious reasons just doesn't happen. It seems you just get released with no charge and there's nothing you can do about it.

I may be biased, but as an aside, about a month back I was arrested and detained for a night for asking a police officer why they shut down a show I was playing at, and under what law do they have the right to confiscate musical instruments. He said, "We have the right to confiscate the sound source" to which I replied, "then taking my guitar and leaving the amps and P.A. is the equivalent of confiscating a CD and leaving the stereo. The guitar doesn't make any noise. We were just about to finish anyway, we just wanna go home without any trouble."

Then I was arrested, and released the next day with no charge or viable explanation. They told me I was taken in because I was drunk and a "danger to the general public". On any other night this may be true, but I was starting work at 4:30 am the next day, and had a night off the liquor for once. And this is how the Good Lord repays me.

Filed a complaint immediately; spoke for about an hour with the senior sergeant of the police force who seemed to be perturbed by what had transpired, but nothing came of it. People get arrested for silly shit all the time, and as long as they don't get beaten up, nothing happens...
