gy!be at Constellation Records

I always enjoyed them the most out of all of the late 90s/early 00's post-rock/epic song bands like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Mono, et al, so this is good news to me. Saw them in '03 at Variety in Atlanta and it's a concert I'll never forget. It was like being run over by a Mack truck.

Creative Loafing REVIEW from that Variety Show

Just got tix to see Silver Mt. Zion. This is pretty great news, and when I read it, I really hoped they would be curating a US ATP show instead of a UK. That line-up so far looks really good. GSYBE, Bardo Pond, Tim Hecker...Mike Watt.

I tried to get tickets to both the DC and Philly reunion shows. Both sold out very quickly. The "secret" passwords were definitely leaked, which is why those passwords for pre-sales are such jokes. Anyway, tickets are going for $70+ now on various websites for the DC show. Bummer.

Huh, I guess they haven't announced their Pomona date yet. Apparently, I'm going to this, but there's a pretty strong chance I'll get bored and spend the show watching it on a screen from the balcony outside.

Damn. Only a mid-week show in Athens. Still......

I only own "Lift Your Skinny Fists......." and enjoy it every once in a blue moon (much like most stuff in this vein). Any recs on where to go from there?

That's their best album, IMO, but you may also like the Slow Riot for Zero Kanada EP. It's a lot shorter, at least.

I also like their debut: F#A#

I was obsessed with them for a good 3 years after Lift Your Skinny Fists came out. I do remember their last, Yanqui UXO, being a bit of a let down as it wasn't as tension/release dramatic as their past stuff.

I am going to suggest F#A#∞

East Hastings (used in 28 Days Later) was as song that I used to listen to over and over and over again. Still do on occasion. That and "Gathering Storms..." from LYSF...

The whole debut is fantastic though.

Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls from Yanqui UXO is pretty fantastic as well, IMO. But both the EP and F#A#∞ are my recs on where to go with special attention, as I said, to East Hastings. Such a good fucking song.

when they get into a groove, they are incredible live. it's one of the best instances i've ever seen of a band all being on the same page. they'll lock in and reel off epic versions of songs. on the other side of that, they have absolutely the worst and most denigrating banter ever. there is no band i know with a greater gap between enjoyment of their music and contempt for them as human beings.

Pretty sure they said NOTHING at the Atlanta show in '03, or maybe I just glossed over it considering how much they blew me away.

the first time i saw them they didn't say a word. the second time, though, their chatter was enough to ruin the show for me.

Yeah, Efrim was pretty chatty when I saw Silver Mt. Zion this year.

efrim went on a few different political tangents that were typically annoying and long-winded. but then he really went off generalizing that everyone in the audience was part of the problem with the wars in iraq and afghanistan because we were the bombmakers responsible for murder and we weren't upset enough, or something. (the show was at carnegie mellon university, so he got a little carried away knowing that it's an engineering school.) there was a diatribe about traveling the world and anyone who doesn't is wasting their life away, to which i then yelled out something like "when you want to see the world, you tell your booking agent where you want to go." basically, any momentum that the band built up during their songs was lost during these interludes.
