So a buddy of mine wants to start going once a week. I used to bowl quite a bit when I was a kid (12-13), but haven't been very often in my adult years. Seems like a fun way to kick back, drink shitty draft beer, and quote The Big L once a week, so I told him I'd look into buying a ball. I've been researching bowling balls for the past hour, and I'm kinda intimidated now. WTF are these guys talking about?

Image
I decided to try Brunswick's Basic Asymmetric drilling layout #2 for mid-lane hook & back-end reaction. I always seem to get a good predictable read from the ball with this layout.

What I got from this layout: No surprises here, just a strong revving mid-lane reaction with a great deal of power at the pins. As aggressive as this ball is, I'm going to need a good amount of oil to be able to use this ball to its' full capabilities.

On a fresh typical house shot, I was able to start the ball in between the 4th and 5th arrow, closer to the 5th. At the breakpoint, I was aiming at the 10th board. With the I-Block core, the ball really picks up a roll fast in the mids and makes a strong transition at the breakpoint.

Image
OMG, messengers, pins flying all over the place. I haven’t seen a ball hit like this before. I was truly impressed with the carry I was getting with the 2.5 but this one is even better. Easy to get through the fronts with amazing mid lane and very strong off the spot.

Image
The overall hook strength of the 2.5 has stayed constant, with the strong midlane recovery of the original Siege being incorporated as well. Not to mention, the color scheme seems to be taking the bowling world's attention, as this blend has not been seen on many bowling balls in the recent past.

There has to be at least one professional bowler on Obner, so please help me out.

Go with a Motiv if you're looking for performance.

American made (unlike Brunswick anymore) and a great bunch of guys designing and building them.

And for sake of disclosure, I'm not a bowler. The guys who make and sell the Motiv balls are a client.

no, not really. the winky emoticon is so lame.

13 is probably the last time I bowled.

I love bowling but hardly go anymore, and have never owned my own ball. Is this a league your friend is trying to pull you into?

Dalen, I bet there's a lot of chubby older ladies who smoke More 120s and eat buffalo wings from the snack bar who NEED IT at a bowling alley.

True Fact: the only bowling alley in the county me and bloor and busty and squirg and dana are from is owned by Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff.

I've been bowling in a league for the last 10 years - lot of fun, but as Jewels says, it does get expensive week after week, not to mention it is a commitment (we bowl every Thursday night for 33 weeks out of the year) With our daughter Ruby's arrival a year and a half ago, we added a new team member and my wife rotates with her from week to week so that our daughter doesn't get too worn out.

Having said all of that, I only have a vague idea of what those guys are talking about Dale - they are the bowling equivalent of gearheads - these are the guys who bring 8 different balls every week to bowl with....there can be advantages to it (different balls for different oil conditions(the oil on the lanes tends to break down over the course of an evening)) but most of that is total overkill.

that's what i thought. probably won't ever matter to me.

so do you have to oil your ball, or is the lane itself oiled? serious question.
