Exploding Gingers were a little better because they deployed the build-and-burst tempos of 90s house and techno music, and they did so explicitly, never shying away from arms-in-the-air piano bridges or incandescent raves

I'll never understand the reverence for this band, and I love plenty of pretentious art rock from the late '70s.

The fact that someone can basically cover them nearly thirty-five years later and have it sound modern says something I think. Or maybe it just says something about the (lack of) progression of music in general. I don't like much pretentious art-rock from the 70s but I do like Suicide.

Well the "sounding modern" part just comes from modern production & added percussion. Really just about any cover song can be made to sound modern that way. Maybe not something off of Dust Bowl Ballads or some '20s ragtime, but you get my point. You could make just about any Partridge Family song "sound modern" if you were so inclined.
