Roll Your Moneymaker - Early Black Rock ’n Rolll 1949-1959

LightintheAttic Wrote:
Long before Elvis had rolled his pelvis, or the Rolling Stones tapped into the Mississippi-Blues, and the legions of white bands made their electrified guitars roar, black Blues-Gospel & Jazz artists had laid the cornerstone for the musical revolution known as Rock n Roll! Besides well-known names like Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, or Bo Diddley. This comp also features many unjustly overseen musical pioneers.

From gospel singer Rosetta Tharpe, to Jimi-Hendrix-idol Johnny Guitar Watson, from Ike Turners early Rockabilly-blueprints, to the Doo-Wop-Rock of Ruth Brown. Other artists, including Magic Slim, Andre Williams, Big Maybelle, Rufus Thomas, Lazy Lester, Etta James, and Jesse Stone are featured on this release.

I Smell A Rat: Early Black Rock'n Roll Vol. 2 (1949-1959)

LightintheAttic Wrote:
After the overwhelming success of ‘Roll Your Moneymaker’ here is Volume 2 of ’Early Black Rock ’n Rolll 1949-1959. Long before Elvis rolled his pelvis, the Rolling Stones co-opted the Mississippi Blues and legions of white bands made their electrified guitars roar, black Blues, Gospel and Jazz artists had laid the cornerstone for the musical revolution, that would profoundly shatter the western world: Rock ’n Roll.

Much less known than their white imitators, nonetheless they produced the grittier originals: As performers, who combined the archaic drive of the Blues with Country melodies and the feverish beat of black Gospel services, and pepped up African-sounding rhythms with electric amplification in order to please their audience and its steady hunger for new thrills and sound effects. Available on digipak CD & Limited Double vinyl.

Bound to have been some bail posted during a lot of this shit being recorded. Takes me back to Friday nights sitting outside the Big M Barbecue on Moncrief Avenue- 2 or 3 stupid-ass 17 year old white boys in the middle of 20 or 30 black folks- trading a dozen fresh Dunkin' donuts for an indecent amount of warm Bud tallboys ( Miss Lucy had a sweet tooth)- Solomon Burke and Bobby Bland wailing out of the shitty Seeburg jukebox. Never did learn how to dance. Good times.
