So, I have been on a bit of a pre-Jicks Malkmus kick lately. Lots of Wowee Zowee listened in my car, on the way to & from work, & sprinkling in some Terror Twilight... & today, Brighten the Corners.

I own no other Pavement. What should I buy next?

Mind you, I rank those I have

01. Wowee Zowee
02. Terror Twilight
03. Brighten the Corners (quite a ways below WZ & TT)

get slanted and crooked rain immediately, and if you don't get the expanded editions you need Watery Domestic.

Westing has some essential songs, but is a bit of a difficult listen.

Crooked Rain is the only one I have, so I voted for it, not that that's very helpful to you.

I voted Slanted, but really there isn't any bad choice here.
(Or, any good choice, depending upon who you are.)

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is one of the best albums ever recorded.

I have to go with Crooked Rain as well. I've never been able to get into slanted.

Since this poll is about what Monty should buy next - and assuming he likes the three albums he already has - I'm gonna go ahead and vote for CRCR.

I've constantly shifted back and forth between that and S+E as my favorite Pavement album (and WZ, too, for a little while), but since Monty already has the last three Pavement albums and is coming at them as a fan of Jicks-era stuff, I think CRCR is the logical next step. He can continue to work his way backwards from there, but Westing isn't entirely necessary.

But as jewels said, you really could just go ahead and get both S+E and CRCR immediately, preferably the expanded editions. Chances are slim that you'll regret the purchase.

Voted S+E. Go back to the beginning.

I like CRCR a lot more than Slanted. Why don't you have these already if you have the older albums?

CRCR for me too. I like S&E but CR is much more consistent to me.

agree with Drinky here...continue to work backwards and definitely get the expanded editions. BUT disagree that Westing isn't entirely necessary. it is essential if only for their far-and-away best song ever, "Box Elder"!

I agree with Drinky here, as well. With the listening arc you're on, CRCR is the correct choice. Personally, I too go back and forth on S+E and CRCR as favorites (full lengths). In my opinion, though, the best thing they ever released was Watery, Domestic. Definitely don't miss that! It was the perfect bridge from S+E to CRCR, and it can be the perfect bridge back if you so choose. Another second or third is that the expanded editions of both are essential.

Agree with this completely. If I had to choose: CRCR.

Slanted is the only essential Pavement album. CRCR is next best and worth owning but it's a huge drop from slanted. Westing is openly unlistenable garbage. Watery Domestic isn't very good.

hey Monty, I generally find that people who like WZ the most like SE more than CRCR (myself included). So I would specifically suggest Slanted for you. But whatever.

I disagree, too, as do several others here, obviously. I especially disagree about Watery Domestic.

Sort of agree about Westing, though.
