T-Mobile welcomes you with open arms, cheaper plans, and shittier coverage. (But not as bad as Sprint.)

I actually agree with this commenter...

This may be an unpopular view around here, but at first glance I'm exceedingly happy at the introduction of tiered data plans.

The missus has a 3GS. She's addicted to facebook, words with friends, etc.

Looking at her data usage trend since she got the phone, the most data she's ever used in a single month was 186MB, and that value is well above the norm. Most months she usually ends up at about 100MB.

What I'm seeing here is that I can bump her down to the $15 per month plan with no fear whatsoever. Most months she'll be well within the 200MB cap for the plan, and if she goes over, the next 200MB is another $15. She'll have only cost us a total of $30 for that month's data, which is no more than what we're paying for her data plan right now.

Basically, we save $15 a month. I can pocket that $180 a year and apply it to her next phone in a couple of years' time and still come out ahead. Either that, or I can finally pick up a smartphone and still pay no more per month that we do right now (I'm at work all day where there's an open WiFi network for us to use, so I wouldn't hit 200MB a month either).

I know her usage is very far from what's probably typical 'round these parts, but in our situation, it sounds like we just can't lose.

With the exception that I'll be applying the savings from my wife's lack of data usage to pay for my own ridiculous amount of data usage. :D

I really don't see the big deal. Looks like it'll save me about $45 a month. I have three iPhones on my account, and none of us will exceed the 200MB deal unless something unusual happens.

I've managed to go over 200MB so far this month on my droid but this is my first full month with it and I'm still playing with it more than I probably normally will.

I just moved my company's warehouse to a new location...i use an AT&T 3G usb thingy for the internet since we only need occasional stuff printed (90% happens on our phones); it was pretty good before (much better in the past 2-3 months since they improved their software), but it is fucking BANGING now.

So to make a long story short, I give money to AT&T because their shit works; if it didn't, I would go somewhere else: I'm running a business not playing games.

I don't know how this affects my contract and don't really care. Bills come in, I pay 'em.

i'm actually close to jumping on the iphone train (not because i'm not an apple person, just because a "smartphone" of any kind hasn't really seemed worth it until now) and this seems like a good thing for me. plus, at&t works well in southern vermont when most companies don't (other than, honestly, us cellular).

Really interested in how this works out for you. I'm eligible for a new phone at the end of the month and have been eyeing this since it was announced.

I downloaded an 89 mb phone update last month, and an 11 mb one yesterday. That kind of shit could get costly real quick. I assume the data transferred over wifi doesn't count, which would encourage people to get off the cell phone bandwidth as much as possible.

My favorite apps:

Urban Spoon - find restaurants by proximity, style and cost with reviews
Radar Now - automatically shows weather radar by proximity so you know what's coming
Key Ring Rewards - keeps all your rewards cards for the stores to scan your phone instead of keeping them stuffed in your wallet. I think it only works with hand scanners.
KeePass Droid - Password encryption program, file works with the Windows version of the software also
chompSMS - texting app, which is great for threading messages
Gesture Search by Google - finds anything on your phone by "drawing" letters on the screen
Mortplayer - folder based music player
Simple Lastfm - scrobbler
AudioManager Pro - lets you create shortcuts to stored profiles for ringer and notification volume levels

Favorite games:
Jewels (bejeweled clone)
WordUp! - Like boggle
Puzzle Blox - like bejeweled and tetris combo
Papi Jump - simple jumping game that uses accelerometer.

Other great apps:
Google Sky Maps
Google Translate
Google Goggles
Google Talk

Astro It's a file manager type thing, and while I don't use it for much, it came in super handy for backing up my apps before I did a factory reset after the 2.1 upgrade.
Dial Zero Has a bunch of companies that will dial to a human being. I haven't actually used it yet
Google Gesture Search Just like Timmy said, you draw the letters, and it returns the search as you add them
Google Sky Map I was dicking around while cooking out and used this to find Mars
Hungry This is the easiest and quickest shopping list type app I've used
MapDroyd Lets you download and store offline maps. It's a back-up plan if I get stuck in bumfuck Texas or South Arkansas
Quick Uninstall Makes it quick to uninstall apps.
Ringdroid If you use ringtones (I usually don't), you can create them right on the phone with music you already have on it
Shapewriter Keyboard Same basic idea as Swype. You draw the words. Once you get some of your more common words added to the dictionary, it works well.
Tabbed Out I'm not sure how widespread this is, but you can pay a bar tab with your phone. It's all over Austin.
Twitter The official Twitter app is the best I've used, but it doesn't let you use multiple accounts. Seesmic was my second favorite, and it has multiple accounts.
Congress News, updates about what's going on in DC, but also has quick access to your elected officials by location
Call Track Keeps a log of your calls on a Google Calendar
Google Shopper Scans barcodes and does some comparison shopping, I've mostly used it to scan codes at the bookstore, text the result to The Broad, then she reserves them at the library.
