I just took this album out of the library last night, and it kicked my ass all over the place:
Image

Now, where do I go with more Patton stuff? Of course, Faith No More... but: Angel Dust? That's supposed to be their best?
Which Mr. Bungle? And are the other Fantomas records just as good?

In other words, let's just talk about the awesomeness that is Mike Patton and I will use this thread to guide me through his music.

Also, a Patton tenner might be kinda cool.

if you liked that fantomas album, you should definitely try out the director's cut which is all covers of horror movie theme songs. it's my favorite. delerium cordia is one long song and not as good. suspended animation is based on cartoon music. i like it.

i'd recommend the first 2 tomahawk albums as well.

angel dust is my personal preference for faith no more but their later albums have some great songs on them too.

california is probably the easiest mr. bungle album to get into, as they got less frenetic. after that, i'd go with their debut and if you like that, get disco volante.

For other Fantomas records, Director's Cut is way better, actually. It's essential Mike Patton. Other Fantomas is spotty, but the one based on a calender/cartoons - Suspended Animation - is at least as the good as the one you were just listening to.

The best Mr. Bungle is Disco Volante, I think. California is great, too. Some people prefer the s/t debut, but I don't think it's aged very well. They have some earlier stuff that's kinda hard to find, but it's sorta like a lesser Butthole Surfers, I think.

I think Angel Dust is the best Faith No More, but King for a Day is really good, too.

The first Tomahawk album is pretty good.

edit: yeah, what shiv said, pretty much.

I'm not a big Patton fan, and I really think he ended up ruining FNM, but Angel Dust is great, and the Mit Gas album by Tomahawk is damn good too.

(a) I've always like the first two albums, with Chuck Mosley singing, the best. I realize that Patton is a better singer, but I like the style of Mosley better (and the music better too).

(b) Jim Martin always was FNM to me, or at least defined the FNM sound. Once he got fired, because (allegedly) the rest of the band wanted to go more unconventional instead in a more conventional rock sound, due mostly to Patton's influence in that regard, they lost me.

Bloor's right.

Roddy Bottoms sucked it, too.

Angel Dust is Mike Patton's finest hour.

try Lovage, if you like the loungey trip hop sound...side project with dan the automator.

Yeah, I bought a CD of California too. Even liked it enough over the years to keep it.

It's also proof that "more accessible" Mr. Bungle is still something pretty far from accessible.

His Peeping Tom side project is good, and has a lot of good guests on it like Kool Kieth, Rahzel, Kid Kola, Massive Attack, etc.

I didn't like Peeping Tom at all; and live they weren't that entertaining either.

I agree with you here on both points...that s/t was my JAM when it came out though. So very dated now though.

Yeah, speaking of dated, I actually think King For A Day holds up a little better than Angel Dust. AD will always hold a place because it was big like the summer before senior year in HS but some of it is pretty painful.

Of course I still find a lot of value in parts of The Real Thing (all of Side 2 in fact)

I still enjoy King For A Day a good bit.

Listening to this now for the first time and that part of me that loves Tom Zé is really loving this, too.
Nice.
Thank you!
