Blitzen Trapper - Destroyer of the Void

Ew. This is pure dreck and I really liked Furr.

Sounds like Bread or America with prog rock thrown in for good measure.

I definitely don't agree.

btw, I wouldn't call everything prog just because a song contains more than 3 melodic ideas...

It's really, really bad, and I was a fan of Furr as well.

A buddy of mine even convinced me to give it fresh ears after I dismissed it on Facebook: I did and it still sucked.

Guess I missed it, or as it appears, I didn't miss much.

I haven't heard Destroyer of the Void but I can't imagine I'd like it less than Midlake's ponderous and droning The Courage of Others. That gets my vote.

I could barely make it through half of that album before I deleted it. I knew there was no way in hell that I would ever like it.

I haven't listened to more than 30 seconds of this one...when you say dead, I say die.

I agree it's more America and less prog.

But it's 100% terrible.

Midlake gets my vote too, what an awful listen that is.

I'll probably give Blitzen Trapper a listen but my expectations are definitely low after seeing this thread.

They've since changed their website, but I'm convinced that BT ripped off Ween's website for the cover.

I agree that Midlake is the worst, especially given the high bar set by Van Occupanther.

Interesting.

Still Charlotte Gainsbourg for me, but The National and Dum Dum Girls are giving it a run for its money.

Plenty of things can be worse than that Aerial Pink. Take your favorite album from this year, for example. It's probably much worse.

My favorite album of 2010? Hm. I haven't really thought about it. Haven't heard Dum Dum Girls, but I am pretty underwhelmed by The National's latest.

Just FYI I had originally directed that at Capt. Fish-Fuck, but I added to it to address your Ariel Pink comment.

I mean I don't love that Ariel Pink album (I don't think), but it's definitely pretty cool and better than most of what I've heard this year.

To me, it just sounds like a poorly executed version of stuff Ween has done in the past, and done way better.

I could say something like the Joanna Newsom album but it's just something I'm not into, not actually the worst and has artistic merit.

So I'll go with Drake.

I definitely get the Ween comparison (made it myself in the NP thread), but I think there's a key difference. I feel like Ariel Pink is really embracing that style of music more than Ween ever did. For me, Ween is totally empty stuff because of the jokey underlying cynicism. It's like they hate music. Ariel Pink really straddles that fence, but I kinda like that. It's not all a joke, but it's not really serious, either.

I really like that Ariel Pink record. I don't know anything about the artist in question, motives, previous work etc. In fact, I just listened to it because when Dalen posted the link with some blurb it seemed like something I might like, and I did. As for Ween, I don't get that at all. I've tried to give those guys a chance, many times I might add, but ultimately I just really, really hate them.

Hmm.

I haven't listened to Ariel Pink but "Round and Round" is awful and don't see how that compares to ween at all. I always thought the beauty of Ween was that they actually loved the music they were making fun of. 12 golden greats is sincere country music yet they're totally making fun of it at the same time.

I don't want to derail the thread, but this seems incompatible to me. How does one make sincere music with no pretense and make fun of it?

I understand what you're saying, Chuckles, but agree with Tanner.

Also - Ween rulez
