This time, it's Paste Magazine that's struggling. They've become my favorite over the past few years and I'd hate to see them go. I know there's a few people here that read it so I figured I'd post this for them.

Here's the link if you've a mind to help out.

Save Paste

Yeah, this actually made local news. They've already gone to issuing 1 issue for 2 months instead of one and the employees have taken a 20% pay cut.

There is simply no ad revenue.

I'll probably donate $5. I still have a subscription. The Buddy and Julie Miller article in the current issue is worth that alone.

Thanks for posting about this. I sent $10.

I've been a subscriber for a while, but was thinking about letting the sub lapse. The CD has been pretty spotty, and they just don't write about bands that I care about.

Much like Obner.

I was previously a subscriber. As with many music mags, the setback is as soon as they are published the news has been online for ages. Not to say that they haven't had some great in-depth interviews (the T-Bone Burnett one comes to mind), but I found much of it fluff. For awhile didn't they even get rid of the starred reviews in favor for a more pleasing "every record we review is ok"?

In the email I got, they said they are in financial strain, but not in dire need. Good news I suppose. Probably better than sending in money is to give a gift subscription to someone. Then their reader numbers go up, which leads to *hopefully* more ad revenue. Sending them $ is pretty vicarious imo.

Really? They've written about every band under the sun at one point or another.

I donated $10. I like their graphic design and they've tipped me off on some good tunes over the years.

Still waiting for that Uriah Heep interview. :)

I like my rock a little harder, maybe that's why.

I work in the business. it's only a matter of time before ALL magazines go under or go digital.

I hope you're wrong.

I just can't see it unless technology gets so cheap where everyone can afford a Kindle or something where they can walk up to a newstand on the street or airport and upload a magazine for $3 or something.

It's possible but not anytime soon.

That's not a very compelling argument.

Therefore ALL of them will die? I don't buy it. I see them becoming a niche product, but not dying altogether. Not to get off the subject of Paste or anything...

boston globe almost died.
NY Times is cutting entire sections and weekend supplements and you're about to pay to look at it online.

Nylon is now digital only, as well as a few others (just happen to know this offhand). I can like 15 magazines that have died since I started my job 2 years ago, everything from Men's Vogue to Jewish Living. Not to mention a ton of newspapers. Conde Nast and Hearst (which basically publish every magazine ever) are laying people off, as well as NYT co. which owns a bunch of other papers (like the Globe)....

I am too tired to go into compelling evidence but it's a known fact that the newspaper and magazine business is dying quickly. Will all of them die? who knows. I think there will be a paradigm shift, not unlike music going digital. Some will likely survive but for a while its going to be barebones.

I disagree. Newspapers and magazines are completely different animals. Newspapers are a dying industry. The Magazine publishing industry is troubled now because advertising is the first budget item companies cut during downturns and magazines are dependent on advertising. Magazine publishing has never been that profitable an industry but quality indepth journalism is less easily replaced by the web than simple news reporting. The fact that Jewish Living or PPDD Weekly can't make it now isn't an indictment of the magazine publishing business model during stronger economic times.

<---- still subscribes to two specialized newspapers and about 7-8 magazines.
