Parody thread! Also, I just made this mix over the weekend, inspired by something from the Unjustly Ignored thread.

I’m sure something like this must already exist somewhere in the world of mixes, but I decided to throw this together anyway. I won’t pretend to know in all cases whether these songs were covered as homage or as a lark (or both) but nonetheless I think it’s a cool collection of tunes and at least a tiny bit of insight into the minds of the 1st generation of punk rockers. Once again I made up my own rules about what I would and wouldn’t include, and then decided to bend the rules as necessary.

A few notes:
- For itunes users the tracks are tagged with LP information, which may set the years off a bit (“Tutti Frutti” was a single in 1955, and the album Here’s Little Richard came out in ’57).

-I wanted to present the original originals when feasible (The Ramones were probably covering the Beach Boys and the Dickies were probably covering Barry McGuire, but I went with the earlier versions here).

01. Little Richard – Tutti Frutti (MC5 – Back In The USA)
02. Bobby Freeman – Do You Want To Dance? (Ramones - Rocket To Russia)
03. Chuck Berry – Johnny B. Goode (Sex Pistols – The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle)
04. Jerry Lee Lewis – Breathless (X – More Fun In The New World)
05. The Kingsmen – Louie, Louie (Black Flag – The First Four Years)
06. The Rolling Stones – Tell Me (You’re Coming Back) (Dead Boys – We Have Come For Your Children)
07. The Animals – We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (FEAR – The Record)
08. P.F. Sloan – Eve Of Destruction (Dickies – Incredible Shrinking Dickies)
09. Bobby Fuller Four – I Fought The Law (The Clash – S/T)
10. The Standells – Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White (Minor Threat – Salad Days)
11. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Walk On The Water (Richard Hell & The Vovoids – Blank Generation)
12. T. Rex – The Wizard (Johnny Thunders – So Alone)
13. Captain Beefheart – I Love You, You Big Dummy (Buzzcocks – Time’s Up)
14. Sweet – Ballroom Blitz (The Damned – Long Lost Weekend)
15. Bob Marley – Johnny Was (Stiff Little Fingers – Inflammable Material)
16. Garland Jeffreys – Wild In The Streets (Circle Jerks – Wild In The Streets)

Weird. I just found the Pop Punk Message Board while searching for dl links, and saw this very mix (and very post) not even a half hour ago.

PS: anything released before 1985 is unlistenable.

Au contraire. Someone still alive and NOT listening to anything released after 1985, or that which sounds contemporary, like it was released in the last 25 years, is the issue at hand.

Speaking of searching for d/l links, I found this while looking for stuff myself. Don't know if they're all active, but the 2 i snagged were smooth.

Jello Biafra and DOA do a good cover of "We Gotta Get Outta This Place". It's on Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors (Alternative Tentacles), which I think is out of print now.
