... and a lot of it will be true, but this person really hit the nail on the head with this review of the deluxe reissue of The Cure's Disintegration, IMO.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/142 ... e-edition/

Ditto with yesterday's review of the REFUSED reissue.

So people do like the two bonus discs for Disintegration?

I may have to rethink my stance on not getting that one.

I think I want that Refused reissue, too, and I still haven't bought the expanded version of Exile. Expensive habit.

Yeah, this Cure reissue and the REFUSED one are the two most tempting reissue packages I have seen. I usually don't bother with these sorts of things, but it seems that I've gotten old enough now that a lot of my favorites are being given the "deluxe" treatment.

Hmm. Think i'll start another thread about deluxe reissues folks are waiting / hoping for.

I haven't heard the Deluxe Edition of Disintegration, but as far as the album itself goes, I don't even think it's the best Cure album, let alone putting it on par with Revolver, London Calling, and the like.

Who's putting it on par with those albums? Pitchfork, by giving it a 10.0? That's just sort of their "classic" designation.

What would you say is a better Cure album, though? I don't know of one I like better, but I know most hardcore Cure fans all have a different favorite.

Don't get me wrong, I like Disintegration, but The Head on the Door and Three Imaginary Boys are the true Cure gems.

And, huh?

Edit: And yeah, a 10.0 to me means there's no better album out there, only a rare few equals.

Yeah, but you should look at what all they've given a 10.0 to over the years. One would think that at this point - much like comments from Thom Yorke on the state of the music industry or the state of anything - Pitchfork's number ratings wouldn't even merit any discussion.

Regardless of what Pitchfork thinks, I think this is the best Cure album ever made. I will agree with the "womb-like" comparison. I was around 18/19 when this album came out, and I think it does hold some meaning just by sheer fact that I was still a teenager and feelings were like, SO ENCOMPASSING. I'll have to pull this out and give it a listen again today. I haven't downloaded the reissue version.

I really dug the Refused review, too. Little too much hyperbole on the drumming, but quite interesting take on the album's effects on the band. Maybe this is the true "Disintegration".

the occasional silly review notwithstanding, pitchfork is internet gold to me, and essential for any fan of indie music. i love that site, and only wish i had been a part of forming it.

I'm curious how they could get to 3 discs worth of material especially since they already released that box set of bsides and rarities a couple of years ago. I can't possibly see myself rebuying this. The Cure were an important band to me in my youth but one that I have a lot less desire to hear today. I think the sound quality of my original isn't that bad that it would be necessary to upgrade and if the extras are 2 discs worth of alternate takes I don't think I would be that interested in listening to those once let alone feel the need to own.

I clicked on the review and skim read and didn't see an answer to what the extras are although it is entirely possible i missed it. I think that's the first time I've been on Pitchfork's website in several years. I'm not a hater - I just lost interest in most of what they review years ago.

Regarding Drinky's question, I'd put any of the first four and "The Head on the Door" above "Disintegration" Some of that is surely just related to their impact on a very young Billy G and good memories of times those were personal soundtracks. I'm pretty sure I would like "Disintegration" more than some of them if we were first approaching all of those albums today without that personal bias.

I like Pitchfork, but I use it more as a loose guide to what an artist sounds like and listing of new releases. I think most people do the same. I certainly don't think it's the gospel when it comes to good music.

I like the news, interviews and features they run. Reviews I definitely take with a grain of salt. I currently miss the LaLa album player (thanks Apple) that let you listen to the review album yourself so you can form your own opinion.

Yeah, definitely miss the Lala player. I hope they find some sort of replacement. It looked for a little while like maybe they might start using that soundcloud site or whatever it's called.

It especially sucks now that last.fm dropped their streaming feature, too. I guess we're stuck with myspace and youtube for the time being.

Head on the Door has higher highs but Disintegration is more consistent overall says 14 year old Bloor and his bracelet made of safety pins.

The Cure is one of those bands that I listened to a LOT at a certain time in my life, still like a lot but rarely feel the need to listen to.

the labels don't want on demand streams. it's that simple.

One thing I find about Pitchfork is that even though their ratings on an album can seem really weird at first, a lot of the time it's pretty accurate. Some of the stuff they've said is crappy that I liked lost it's luster pretty fast, while generally the stuff they give higher ratings sticks with me for a lot longer.

Is there anything less interesting than ranking the top 200 tracks of the 90s? Why are they doing this?
