I'm not the biggest Kinks fan, but this looks like it could be pretty good. Ray Davies sings with a bunch of bands/collaborators of his own choosing, although I wish he would've chosen with a little better judgement (yea on Springsteen, Spoon, the 88, Lucinda Williams, Alex Chilton, and Black Francis; nay on Bon Jovi, Jackson Browne, Metallica, and Billy Corgan).

Tracklist:

Ray Davies - See My Friends (due out 11/1)

01 “Better Things” - Bruce Springsteen
02 “Celluloid Heroes” - Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora
03 “Days/This Time Tomorrow” - Mumford & Sons
04 “Long Way From Home - Lucinda Williams & The 88
05 “You Really Got Me” - Metallica
06 “Lola” - Paloma Faith
07 “Waterloo Sunset” - Jackson Browne
08 “‘Til the End of the Day” - Alex Chilton & The 88
09 “Dead End Street” - Amy Macdonald
10 “See My Friends” - Spoon
11 “This Is Where I Belong” - Black Francis
12 “David Watts” - The 88
13 “Tired of Waiting” - Gary Lightbody
14 “All Day and All of the Night/Destroyer” - Billy Corgan

Looks like a pretty good mix of tunes.

I have no idea who Gary Lightbody and Paloma Faith are. Billy Corgan is the only one that really makes me cringe. I really like Jackson Browne. I like Lucinda Williams enough but her strength is her own songwriting. I wouldn't expect that to be one of the stronger songs on the set. This seems worth checking out but I doubt I'd want to listen to this over the Kinks originals once the novelty wears off.

Yeh, I guess it's an interesting enough exercise in recycling, but letting Bon Jovi anywhere near Celluloid Heroes should be a fucking prosecutable crime.

Yeah, I'd certainly check it out. I own this:

Much like most things like this it's hit or miss (Fastball does a cover??). More indie-centric bands but it has some gem covers by Lambchop, Bebel Gilberto, Matthew Sweet, and Fountains of Wayne, who cover "Better Things" and is easily my favorite Kinks cover.

This looks good. On another note, when I first saw it I read it as Ray Charles and started laughing at the "see my friends" bit.

yeah that FoW cover of "Better Things" is soooooo great. Billy Corgan with Ray Davies could be cool, as long as it's just BIlly playing classic Pumpkins guitar, and not singing it in some terrible piano ballad way.

Absolutely. But my kid likes Jovi, and I will use this to introduce him to the Kinks. Not that I couldn't do it by handing him something like Low Budget, but still...

I'll take 'em from wherever I can find 'em, but magiska and mikkisays are pretty reliable for new releases.

Edit: in case anyone's wondering, this See My Friends thing is pretty shitty. Lucinda Williams, Frank Black, Spoon, and Alex Chilton w/the 88 put in decent attempts, but the rest is either completely forgettable or entirely offensive.
