I know a few of you will be lighting the first candle tonight. To get you all in the spirit:

i never knew anything about hannukkah, but i just learned today it's a celebration of the Jewish people beating down the Syrians. And more power to 'em, cause I guess the Syrians were pricks and the Jews were fighting for religious freedom,I just never knew it all started with a war/battle.

In celebration of the first night, my children and my (shiksa) wife reminded me that it was the first night, and that we should light the first candle. Then, we did so, with me leading the family in the half of the prayer that I remembered from my childhood.
Good times.

As to the meaning of Hanukkah, I can't remember which comedian said it, but it was a pretty good summary:
"The meaning of most Jewish holidays is: 'They tried to kill us; we survived; let's eat!'"

Just ordered this for her for a Hanukkah/Christmas present:

She'll probably only wear it to (my) family gatherings, but it will be fun for that.

Last night invented the Hannukah Double-Down: two (or more) of my Mom's delicious latkes sandwiching whatever you may crave. For example, on the 6th night of Hannukah I had the Latke-Applesauce-Sour Cream-Latke-Smoked Meat-Potato Chips-Chopped Liver-Latke Double-Over.
