Is there anyway you can retag things in your iPod and then transfer those tags to iTuines?

Not sure that makes sense, so I'll try to explain. Basically, I have some stuff with screwed up tags on my iPod. Manually retagging is a pain in the ass and takes too long. I know I can retag them automatically using MediaMonkey and that will get them straight on my iPod, but once it synchs back with iTunes, will I just lose all that or is there a way the tags on the iPod can override what is in iTunes?

If there are any retagging solutions that are free and work with iTunes, that would be great. I know worst case scenario I could retag everything in Mediamonkey, use Sharepod to transfer all the properly tagged files to my hard drive and then reload everything back again through iTunes, but that's a really long way around and a pain in the ass and we're talking over 100 gig to reload and transfer twice, first to the computer and then back. I'd rather not go through all that.

You know...with this and all the proprietary stuff for iPhones and iPads and all...I really gotta say fuck Apple. This should be straightforward but all their shit trying to force you into using buying from the iStore or whatever the fuck it is called makes it fucked up and don't even talk about piracy because it is just as bad with files ripped from CDs I own and anything. But, damn if being able to carry around a thousand or more albums on a little iPod doesn't make me wanna dance with the devil.

does itunes still do the proprietary stuff?

also, can't you just delete the stuff off your ipod and then repopulate it?

otherwise, I'd suggest changing things in your itunes, not your ipod. Maybe use something like Media Rage. But that could take weeks depending on the size of your library and how much of it got screwed up. It might be worth writing down everything that's screwy and just changing that.

What's wrong with your tags?
The one thing that is all messed up in my tags is the music type. I've got: Rock, Blues Rock, Rock and Roll, Rock & Roll, Hard Rock...etc.

If you edit a file on your computer, doesn't iTunes sync the modified file to the iPod automatically? (Does this create 2 files, where you have to delete the incorrect one manually?)

If it were me...I'd wipe my iPod, edit the tags on my computer, and re-upload everything to prevent problems, duplicates, etc.

Some of the tags are just all fucked...like no artist or the album in the song title...different stuff different places.

If there's an auto way to retag in iTunes that would be great. I was just hoping to be able to not open and retag by hand every file. I have a way to do that on the iPod, but not in iTunes.

I mean yeah, if I wanna go back and hand edit a bunch of shit and reload etc... I can figure that out just fine. Was hoping for a more sensible less labor intensive solution.

well, I'm pretty sure there is no way to fix it on the iPod, then have the change migrate over to iTunes, without ripping the music off the iPod with a 3rd party app and then loading that in your iTunes instead of the improperly tagged item.

I also strong suspect that there will be no great tag fixer, either, to do bunches of retagging. What I do is every once in a while (perhaps once every couple of years) I do a general sweep of the songs on my iPod and fix everything--from adding album art to deleting downloaded songs which put the track number in front of the track name, and other petty issues like that. It is usually a several day project, but damn it feels good in the end.

I do wish I was content to use MediaMonkey as just my standard interface instead of iTunes, for the very good auto tagging alone. But I just don't like the ergonomics of it and the aesthetics of it are crap.

Yeah, sounds like it is as I feared, gotta go manually retag a couple hundred files if I want it to all be straight in the end.

Oh well. If I start now maybe by the new year everything will be square.

yeah if you were able to change the files on the ipod then itunes would either overwrite them or leave them alone but it would not import the changes. i had to do a mass fix about a year ago and now i just make sure everything is square before it hits the library
