Strange year for me. I really struggled to muster much enthusiasm for any music (apart from some Coltrane or Lee Morgan) for the first 6 months, a few albums on the list have probably found themselves on the low end because of this. I was also very late to some excellent records after reading a "best of thread" on the Goner forum, and some of them have made it, although I'm not too sure on the long-term appeal.

21-50 first. I'll try and find an accompanying youtube for the rest.

21- John Wesley Coleman - Bad Lady Goes To Jail
22- Paul Motian - Lost In A Dream
23- Len Price 3 - Pictures
24- Personal & The Pizzas - Raw Pie
25- Paul Cary - Ghost Of A Man
26- Nick Curran & The Lowlifes - Reform School Girl
27- David S Ware - Onecept
28- Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
29- The Qualitons - Panoramic Tymes
30- The Splinters - Kick

31- Cheap Time - Fantastic Explanantion
32- NoBunny - First Blood
33- Pierced Arrows - Descending Shadow
34- The Secret Prostitues - Nevermind The KBD This Is ADD
35- The Fresh & Onlys - Play It Strange
36- Venetian Snares - My So Called Life
37- Parting Gifts - Strychnine Dandelion
38- The Anomalys - The Anomalys
39- Teenage Fanclub - Shadows
40- The Melvins - The Bride Screamed Murder

41- El Guincho - Pop Negro
42- Budos Band - Budos Band III
43- Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues
44- Derek Trucks Band - S/t
45- Shonen knife - Free Time
46- Marty Stuart - Ghost Train
47- Haunted george - American Crow
48- Subway Surfers - Three Chords & A Mission
49- Overnight Lows - City Of Rotton Eyes
50- Gerardo Frisina - Join The Dance

That Len Price was sure to be on top for about month, but my kids just beat it to death. I was surprised that the Fresh & Onlys did not have much talk on here other than from you.

They play Len Price A LOT on Underground Garage. It's funny, it usually catches my ear, and I go through a list of British Invasion bands in my head, and then hit the info button and sorta chuckle learn it's Len Price again.

Fack, I liked that Nick Curran and forgot to put it on my list.

I think of Len Price 3 & Free Energy as basically the same record. Different genre, but both part of the " do not overthink this". Fun & hooks galore. Both Top 15

Quite a few of the albums in your 21-37 are in my top 30ish. I thought the Subway Surfers were terrible, and I think the new Cheap Time record blows. I wanted to get more into the Secret Prostitutes, but it just sounds like bland punk to me. I won't comment on the rest yet in case I end up posting my list around here.

20- Balaclavas - Roman Holiday

Image

Really interesting record with tightly knit and quite complex songs. Post-punk/dub punk with a darker goth side, really hard to tie down.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19- Paul Collins - King Of Powerpop

Image

Highly infectious power pop tunes to dance to, with a couple of awesome covers (Box Tops and Flamin' Groovies). Produced by Jim Diamond who also plays bass on this. Great fun.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18- Ty Segall - Melted

Image

I'm not that keen on his previous recordings but he's become a little more tuneful and psychedelic on Melted which really suckered me in. His voice is starting to wear me down a bit now, but this was a real grower over the year and a pleasant suprise.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17- Drive By Truckers - The Big To-Do

Image

I still remember when I ridiculously claimed them to be a "shitty bar band" (or something like that) and then a few weeks later i was converted. Forgive me father.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16- The Magnificent Brotherhood - Dope Idiots

Image

Second album by this German garage rock band. Fuzz & Farsifa.

I thought that Len Price 3 record was beyond terrible. It should be right in my wheelhouse but it's like they go too fucking far trying to sound authentic or something that it just comes off really poorly. There's at least a half dozen other bands mining the same territory I'd rather listen to.

I wouldn't go as far as to call them terrible, but I tend to agree with your main point.

Also, I was really disappointed with that Paul Collins album. Great version of "The Letter" though.

Probably the only list other than mine that has Los Lobos... and never heard of Hacienda, what a good find - garage tex mex.

I've been a fan of them for a while now and had such high hopes for this record, but i was really disappointed with the direction they seem to be taking. I still like the record, I was addicted to "Waterfall" for a couple of weeks, but they definitely seem to straying towards a more indie rock sound than the psych/garage I was looking for from them.

For some reason I never heard it and I buy or at least acquire their albums when they come out...not enough hours in this modern world sometimes.

Nice job Pete. Thanks for taking the time.

Really curious about a lot of those. I picked up that Jason Moran based on your rec a while back. Good stuff.

I sampled the new one a little yesterday and loved it - immediately added it to my Christmas list.

I'm going to sample some other stuff on your list, I haven't heard of a lot of it.

Eh, I concur with RadMan that they're not terrible. Bit of a stretch. Almost EVERY dogf**ker is out there mining something that's been done before that has nothing to do with "authenticity". You have your influences or you wear it on your sleeve. Maybe to some degree they're "wearing" their conviction but I don't see how they're any different from Free Energy. In the other thread you made a very good point about not thinking about it too much. Same thing applies here. At least they play da rock n roll, and put on a great live show.

I can certainly see where Bloor is coming from. I mean, I don't think they are trying too hard at all, they are very upfront with their influences and how they want this record to sound. I imagine he's had a similar reaction to these guys that i had to that Carolina Chocolate Drops record.

No worries man. It's very cool that you grabbed the Moran record, highlight of my year "discovering" him.

I'd really to see your list, I'm sure they'd be quite a lot I'd be interested in.

It's just his damn sneer that has endeared me to the Cheap Time, coupled with him slowing it down. I've said previous that i thought it a little uninspired initally but he's won me over.

I thought The Secret Prostitues was a whole lot of fun, but It's nothing special.

The Subway Surfers is pretty crappy.

Yeah, I like your list a lot... you and contradiction's lists are the most "useful" to me. Of course that Charles Lloyd is better than anything else any of us put on the list. Like comparing a real meal to a candy bar. I want to like Harvey Milk but the guy just sounds like he's got a painful constipation going on. The voices on much of blackdoomgrind metal just kill it for me.

Cheers Harry, looking forward to your list as always.

Totally blown away by the Charles Lloyd record, gutted that I didn't get a chance to see them live when they played the London jazz festival.
