Like when someone says "Hey you won an argument on a message board, good for you, loser."

Will online discusion eventually be seen as a real forum of debate, or it is always going to be seen as a meaningless battle between two people trying to not look as stupid and dorky as the other?

Or, is the Message Board already valid, and when a person uses the above line, it's just a cover because he/she lost the argument.

i think that the medium, because it is so transient and filled with trolls and drunks (like me tonight), will have a hard time establishing itself as other than an informal medium for debate - because it works better for informal communication, rather than coherent argumentation.
