Meat Puppets: Self-Titled

Along with records from the Butthole Surfers, some of the weirdest punk rock to come out of the early 80s. And, for all those reviews calling this straight ahead hardcore...well, OK...as long as your view of hardcore encompasses covers of Tumblin' Weeds and Walkin' Boss, complete with slowed down weirdness in the guitars and plaintive twangy vocals. Certainly more full throttle and flat out strange than subsequent releases by these guys. I probably need to get more in touch with the rest of their catalog, but after this slab, the next record and subsequent releases just sounded so normal and reserved I never really got into the group as a whole, while returning to this one.

The Meat Puppets were my gateway band into the wonderful world of the underground, back in the late 80's. However Up on the Sun was the first album of theirs that I ever heard, and I was never, ever able to get into the debut. Just too... non-musical. Maybe I need to give it another listen, though; it's been about 15 years or so, now and your description has once again piqued my interest in hearing it. Thanks.

I can see that. It's not exactly a really musical album for the most part, outside of a few moments where it crops up. Lots of atonal chaotic noise with moments of musicality tossed in. I believe I remember reading somewhere that the guys basically just loaded up on acid and spent a couple days in the studio and this was what came out.

Sam Cooke: The Man Who Invented Soul (4 CD Box)

I love Sam Cooke. I've seen some deride him as too pop, but I don't give a shit. He's an amazing singer with a deep catalog and in my book he goes down as one of the absolute greatest soul singers of all time. Sadly, collecting a career overview isn't easy as his catalog spans old gospel tracks, a period of records on Keen and RCA (collected here) and albums on Abko nearer the end of his tragically too short career. This set for my money does a fantastic job of collecting the middle period and frankly while I guess many would expound on the virtues of his gospel phase, I don't much care about that part. I only miss the Abko material here. Taken from a review, here is a description of just what is here:

Disc 1 of this set compiles his 1957-1959 recordings for the Keen label, which had tamed the former gospel tiger into a sweet, wry songwriter with a taste for crooning standards and a signature yodel that marked every song as his property. The second and third discs do the same for his RCA career's singles and album tracks, which, for all their orchestrated slickness, left an indelible mark on soul and even rock (compare "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On" to Elvis Costello's "Blame It On Cain"!). Lastly, there's a disc with two complete albums from Cooke's stylistic poles: Night Beat (after-hours cool soul) and Live at the Harlem Square Club (Cooke as hard-hollering crowd mover). As a survey of the middle period of Cooke's career, this set is totally solid; be advised, though, that it skips over both his early years shouting gospel with the Soul Stirrers and the classic recordings from the last year or so of his life--which include hits such as "Shake" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" that are still, flabbergastingly, out of print.

Basically if you want all the Sam Cooke 90% of people would need, get this box set along with Keep Moving ON, a collection of the best of his Abko years, including Shake, A Change is Gonna Come and many more and you're all set.

Nobody, I'm a big fan of Sam Cooke as well. If you don't like him, you probably have no business getting laid, ever.

Big Black: Racer X

The first Big Black record I happened into and still my favorite. Not sure if it is the best or if it just smacked me around good and subsequent things I heard from them just didn't have the same initial impact. Either way, I really pretty much just play this one when I wanna hear Big Black. I've spent a bit of time with other releases and enjoy them, but this is the slab that always pulls me back.
