Been 13 years since the last disc, and there are 13 songs on the new one. Woah.

Yes. I own it and have for a little bit; it is a very good one. Auerbach does leave a little bit of his imprint on the sound of the record, but not so much as to make it anything other than a Bombino record; just enough to make it a little more friendly on Western ears. I do dig it with a big shovel.

Caveat:
The Auerbach-produced record was my introduction to Bombino, and Agadez I only had my first listen to yesterday; I am only just getting my feet wet with the whole Toureg thing. So take my opinion on all that for what it is worth.

Nevertheless, I am really enjoying both of these albums.

Album of the year by far as of now....

I’ve saved the best for last. Not just the best of today, or this week, or of this month — the best of 2013. If any new album will top Pelagial, then you can consider my mind completely fuckin’ blown. Cuz this album — this work of aghast, sheer exuberance — could be the best 54 minutes I’ve ever heard. It not so much as redefines quintessentialism as it never takes it into consideration in the first place: Pelagial is violently organic, real, and true, and it comes into its own more goddamn effortlessly and passionately than everything else in our little world of heavy music. I mean, it’s so fucking good that its instrumental version is a proper album — the music itself is fluid and self-realizing, and cherishes its time in your brain cells exciting synapses and neurons depending whether you have Loïc Rossetti making your spine shiver. Kurt Vile. Looking at my watch at track 8. Can't believe there is still 23 minutes to go. Seems to have been on for hours without anything memorable happening.

Still deciding. Dan Auerbach's touch has brought a bit of Black Keys to it, so it's a little more polished. Not sure if that's a good thing or not though.

Listened to this stream again. Really good (got a nice Pitchfork review today if you care about that sort of thing).

Also, listening to the Deerhunter - Monomania stream on NPR.

yeah i had issues with the production on his first album, mostly that the drums sounded flat. i like this one but think it sounds a little too restrained. i wish there was more stuff like this on it.
