So new, that (as I type this) there isn't even a full story yet, just a headline at CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/

He has already left Cairo, but there had been no word that he stepped down, until just now.

The BBC reported it this morning but I think there was some question to its accuracy. Have they confirmed this?

Looks like there was an announcement by Suliman. So, I'm thinking that it has been confirmed.

Free to elect leaders who will hate our guts considering how long we propped up Mubarak and others. But, eventually there comes a point where you have to let that run its course as we can't just strong arm the region forever.

Watching the live feed from NBC in our control room. Incredible.

Also...an important point to remember is, Mubarak has stepped down, but the country is now in the hands of the military, not some new democratic leader or any such thing. Military control over a nation and freedom are not exactly synonymous and this thing is only starting as far as figuring out who's actually gonna step into the leadership void.

how could there be a democratic leader without an election? that was actually obvious (and kinda okay in this case) that the military plays an important role until there was enough time for the preparation of an election.

I'm not saying there was some democratic leader ready to step in or anything. And yes, it was obvious something like this would happen for the transition if Mubarak stepped down immediately. I'm just saying, in the rush of enthusiasm about everything, it shouldn't be forgotten that while Mubarak is gone, a free and democratic Egypt is far from a certain conclusion. Right now, a dictator is gone and that's a good thing. But in his place is military control and a giant leadership void. We have no idea what will happen next.

true. though I think there's a huge difference between military for example in the US or in germany and egypt. they run civil industry and everything, they are a big player of the economy in their country. it's really weird but because of their good organization they are the only institution to keep some order in the country right now. (which was obvious from the beginning of these protests on)
they are no professional army so a soldier for 3 years or something wouldn't fight against the crowd easily because he rather feels as part of the people than a part of the government.

More to the point to me than the military being in control is that right now we have a headless mass and until some form of leadership starts to emerge, we have no idea where this will go.

it's not over at all, that's for sure. the bargaining has just begun, I mean the major thing for the protesters was mubarak to step down, but they don't want either the other guy suleyman nor the military in power. at some point the people on that plaza will realize that there are things they can only change after an election.
