I've been listening the hell out of London Calling and Sandinista and wondering what I should get next. I got give them enough rope and I didn't like it nearly as much as those other twos. I'd say I'm mostly into their more ska sounding stuff with the horns, stuff like Rudie can't fail and Washington Bullets.

The obvious place to go next is the debut. It's more similar to Give Em Enough Rope, with the punk leanings and all, but there are still some really good ska things on there, too. "Police and Thieves" (the Junior Mervin song) and "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" are both outstanding although neither has horns.
If all you're digging is that kind of thing, then get Combat Rock. It's not half the record that London Calling is, nor the debut. But if there are specific things that you are looking for, that's the one that has it.
And that pretty much sums up their entire discography. Sadly, not too much there (until you get into the solo stuff).

You'll definitely want the debut, and you'll want the US version if you like the ska stuff more.

Well, they only have, what, 5 or 6 studio albums? Only so many places you can go.

But, as mentioned, get the debut. There are times when I think it's better than London Calling.

Definitely a more singular statement but it still hints at all the directions they would go.

The debut is my favorite Clash album. Best thing to do, I think, would be to get either the US or UK version and then download the different tracks from the other one.

Personally, I'd say get the UK version and then download the stuff added to the US version as an addendum since that's, like, more historically accurate or something.

Yeah, I like the US version of the debut better, but that's what I did because I wanted all the songs from both. I really can't believe they released 2 CDs like that instead of collecting it all together. That's pet peeve #1 on the Clash catalog.

The other is they eliminated Black Market Clash and replaced it with Super Black Market Clash. I thought the original was more concise and better. They could at least have released the original with additional songs instead of messing with the whole thing and removing a bunch of good stuff from it. That would be another good place to go though and actually if you like the stuff with additional instrumentation and ska/reggae influences, Super Black Market Clash would probably be a good purchase. The original is three long reggae/dub tracks on one side and like 6-7 short punk tunes on the other. The "Super" version has a lot more alternate takes and stuff like that.

Yeah, I think the Hendrix catalog probably handled this best: release the US and UK versions in their original country, and add the tracks on the opposite country as bonus tracks. The Beatles basically adopting the UK releases and adding the Past Masters collections is an okay solution too. But the Clash and the Rolling Stones (and others I'm sure) haven't done as good a job with this issue in their re-releases.
