...go back and listen to this again:

Yeah, we all know a lot of (most of) those songs already. But I just bought the album and gave it a listen all the way through for the first time. And... damn what a record.

Maybe this is one of those redundant PopTodd threads, stating the obvious, and maybe I am just catching up. But this is a truly great album.

I'm looking at you, Spade Kitty Matt.

I don't think anyone has said that he was never talented. I just think that he crashed that talent into a mountainside somewhere around that album.

I don't think it's the talent that's in question, I think it's the application of said talent.
But I do know folks that will argue against even his Beatles output. I think that this album rivals what he did with the Beatles, and even surpasses a good chunk of it.

I don't agree, but I still think you might have a valid point.

But he has made some AWFUL songs post mid-70s. That's not even counting those electronic albums he did.

and that "Freedom" song still sucks.

I think the song "Jet" is one of the best things he ever did. The fact the lyrics don't make a lick of sense helps too.

I never ran out of a bar screaming in horror when a song from that album came on the jukebox (which it did VERY OFTEN back when), but it never, ever made its way into my house.

The Jellyfish live cover of it is fucking awesome as well.

Aside from the title track I can't say I've knowingly heard a single song on here.

I'd bet you'd recognize "Helen Wheels", "Jet", or "Let Me Roll It".

You may have actually been at the Truckers show with me at the Tab when they covered "Let Me Roll It".

The Melvins covered it last night.

Both Robyn Hitchcock and Spoon cover it as well. It fits Spoon so well that they should consider putting it on a b-side.

Hey, I have Wings' Wildlife and McCartney's Tug of War, so it's not as if I don't try.

Yeah, Paul's post "You Won't See Me" Beatles songwriting is personally disappointing to me, particularly his White Album material. Wings is very, very, very hit or miss for me. I've tried many, many times. I do like covers I've heard of Tomorrow and Some People Never Know, but not the originals. Band on the Run isn't my bag either. I like the last song on the album though.

Tug of War is not anywhere near my favorite, and I'm probably the biggest McCartney fan on the board.

You really ought to check out Ram.

And re: your comment on his songwriting in the beatles, that's a lot of songs you're just sweeping under the carpet.

And why is it "personally" disappointing to you? That's such a wierd choice of words when you didn't live through that era.

I meant "disappointing to me, personally" as in it's not your everyday opinion.

Yeah, it is a lot of songs I'm sweeping under the carpet. Very few of them I could do without. I like some of the Revolver stuff, a couple of his songs on Sgt Pepper, and then pretty much nothing else

You'd like Helen Wheels if you haven't heard it. It's still a classic rock radio standard and manages not to cause nausea like so many other standards.

It's McCartney indulging his fictional redneck.
