c60 Radio: Episode 670

Playing some radio shows from a blog online. c60 radio is a bunch of selections off tape releases posted each month. So far what I've listened to is mostly in the laid back and synthy mode, lots of ambient sorta stuff and heavy on the analog synths and keyboards.

Inspired by the '93 thread. It was the closest I could get to Wild Wood, as I have not yet ripped that album to my iTunes. Still, it is scratching that itch very nicely.

Warren Haynes- Tales Of Ordinary Madness

Image

I'm really liking this- it's his first solo release, wayyyyy back in 1993. Got cool chick backup vocals on a few tracks, and his guitar playing is stellar.

AllMusic: Produced by Chuck Leavell, Warren Haynes' first solo album is a refreshing change of pace from his work with the latter-day incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band. Although the feel of this album is undeniably classic rock, with much of Free's bluesy swagger, it is also vaguely reminiscent of '80s rock at times (check out the Mr. Big-esque verse to "Fire in the Kitchen"). The focus on Tales of Ordinary Madness is clearly on Haynes' songwriting chops. For the most part, the songs on this record are tight and concise, focusing on immediate riffs, gritty vocals, and cool arrangements to sell them. This, however, is not to suggest that Haynes has stopped tearing it up with his guitar, and he amply demonstrates why he is one of the most lauded straight-ahead rock lead guitarists of the '90s. The various bands that back up Haynes are all quite good, and notables Bernie Worrell and producer Leavell both make guest appearances on keyboards. Standout tracks include the mid-tempo "Tattoos and Cigarettes," which is a great showcase for Haynes' under appreciated vocal talents. The smoky "Blue Radio" is also notable for the artist's emotive singing. In fact, the most exceptional thing about Tales of Ordinary Madness is his vocal performance, the overall impact of which stays with the listener far longer than any particular song or hook. There are some slow moments on this record, but it is great party music, and fans of Haynes' work with the Allman Brothers Band would surely be interested in this recording.

Southern Culture On The Skids- Kudzu Ranch

AllMusic: Anyone worried that retro-hillbilly white-trash trio Southern Culture on the Skids would mature in the six years since the band's previous batch of originals can be comforted by just glancing at these song titles. Tunes such as "Pig Pickin'," "My Neighbor Burns Trash," and "Bone Dry Dirt" all fit into the SCOTS' fun-filled catalog by way of their liquored-up and lacquered-down mindset. This short but rocking dozen-track platter follows a live and an all-covers album which gave them breathing room to write ten solid tunes. It recaps the trio's established influences (rollicking surf, chicken-pickin' country, swinging girl group, grimy garage, and simmering swamp rock are present in their trashy glory) and even expands their palette to include spaghetti Western and (modified) punk and psychedelia. Recorded at frontman/guitarist Rick Miller's vintage equipment filled titular studios, the basic three piece is augmented by occasional keyboards and a second guitar, but the core sound is the same as on the group's 1991 debut. Bassist Mary Huff steps up for solo vocal turns three times, most notably on a thumping, T. Rex-driven "It's the Music that Makes Me" and a tough/sexy/playful "Bad Boys." Like any quality veteran act, SCOTS continues to grow, if subtly, as evidenced by this disc's creative instrumental mash-up of Nirvana's "Come as You Are" with Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," an abbreviated three-minute side road that shows how easily the SCOTS' sound can be adapted to other genres. A cover of Neil Young's "Are You Ready for the Country" is less inventive but takes the tune down a sturdy Chuck Berry path. The closing slow dance, "Jack's Tune," somewhat reminiscent of Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk," proves that Miller, Huff, and Hartman maintain their appeal when playing it straight. Early copies of the CD include a link to download four additional tracks, remixes, and alternate versions, which fans will enjoy nearly as much as this terrific addition to SCOTS' catalog of low-rent, high-energy American rock & roll guaranteed to make any party a little better.

Owiny Sigoma Band - S/T
The BBC Wrote:
The Owiny Sigoma Band has a very unusual back-story. Its initial genesis took place in January 2009 when, basking in the euphoria of the election of Barak Obama, five optimistic Londoners headed to Nairobi to collaborate with unnamed Kenyan musicians, for a project partly facilitated by Art of Protest, a voluntary organisation that aims to promote local rap artists and other music makers. The London crew, which includes keyboardist Jesse Hackett, his bass-playing drummer Louis, drummer Tom Skinner, and guitarists Sam Lewis and Chris Morphitis (the latter also doubling up on bouzouki), had no real clear agenda other than getting to know the place, and to create some kind of musical exchange with local players.

Things quickly gelled after Art of Protest introduced the London lads to Joseph Nyamungu, master of the eight-stringed lyre known as the nyatiti, and a powerhouse of knowledge regarding the traditional music of his tribe, the Luo of western Kenya. Joseph then drafted in his drumming mate, Charles Owoko, and everyone was ready to rock, the first set of recordings taking place at a disused factory in the middle of a huge potato market, during a marathon four-day session. Then, 14 months later, the Londoners returned for another couple of days’ worth of recordings, this time with additional Kenyan players drafted in by Nyamungu.

The result is a highly varied album that works surprisingly well, despite being all over the map and decidedly rough around the edges. Opening number Gone Thum Mana Gi Nyadhi draws you in with a mellow groove laden with bass hooks and sprightly keyboard lines, bubbling beneath some ropey Luo vocals; Odero Lwar has delightful lyre riffs and quietly mesmerising drums beneath the boys’ percolating rhythm, while the radio-friendly Wires shifts the balance into the sphere of the Brits, but counterbalances the Anglo influence with doses of Congolese-styled guitar.

Here on the Line gives the boys full focus, with only a gentle lyre and the odd percussive sprinkle hinting at a non-London locale. For me, the truest highlights come when the Kenyans are allowed less-encumbered spotlights, on numbers such as Owegi Owandho and Rapar Nyanz. But everything on this album has enough verve to keep you tuned in from start to finish, making for a refreshingly different listen whose very unevenness somehow adds to the appeal.
