Amy Winehouse is no longer with us. Not a big surprise, I suppose.

Dang. I'm a fan. Sad she couldn't get her life together.

Don't forget Brian Jones and Pigpen. Not sure I'd put Winehouse in a class with any of those people (ok, I definitely wouldn't), but I do think she was talented and for whatever reason, she always struck me as the kind of person that would survive and maybe make some great shit. Guess not.

Holy crap! I came here to see what/if people were posting about the Oslo shooting and I see this.

Really tragic. She was very talented.

I was going to post this and say "kids these days just can't handle their drugs until the finish line..." but this reminds me I saw Pigpen w/GD the year he died and he couldn't sing and was passing out on the organ... "he's very sick" was the official position.

Jesus harry, you're just mentioning this now?

It is a curious number, this 27 business. Regarding the topic at hand, I have no opinion. I heard the Rehab song and my interest ended there.

Yep. Hate to see it happen to anyone.

Very sad and tragic. Back to Black is one of my favorite albums of the past decade. I doubt she ever fully realized how great she could have become.

Wasn't there a thread or discussion on here a few years ago about who would die first, Winehouse or Doherty?

Not only was she the real deal, but she also didn't give two shits what people thought of her. She also wrote her own songs on an old beat up acoustic guitar to go along with that incredible voice. Just last week my wife and I were discussing if she had another record in her with all of her "distractions" and lifestyle. Like most I'm sure, we came to the conclusion that the next news on Amy would be one of two things, a new record coming down the pike, or the news we received this morning. What a damn shame.

In 2007, I was initially put off by all of her "distractions", but it wasn't until I actually paid attention to the music that I was blown away. A few years later it was easy to include Back to Black as a Top 50 pick of the decade.

RIP

this is a downer, but not unexpected. i can't think of a recent singer/musician whose lifestyle overshadowed their music so much. (i guess pete doherty is up there.) it's a shame. i saw her in '07 and she wasn't a complete trainwreck, but her backing band was the star of that show.

I don't think that's how it works. I think she knew exactly how good she was and how great she could be. When you place a huge talent like she had on a frail human being it becomes a crushing weight. I would imagine it makes it more difficult to cope with problems when you have to try and reconcile the most abject personal failures with critical, artistic or commercial success.

I loved her even more as she got worse...total rockstar...I always assumed she'd be like Keith Richards who I believe is ALIVE due to drugs.

Not mentioned as part of the 27 club -
Brian Jones, Pete Ham, Chris Bell, Robert Johnson. Nick Drake was 26

Just really sad.

I wasn't a huge fan, but I enjoyed Back to Black, and my wife and I listened to it a lot together.

When I first heard, I was like a lot of you - sad news, but figured it was only a matter of time. For some reason though, I keep thinking about her, and while I'm not really upset it's sticking with me more than I'd expected. Maybe it's just because the older I get the younger 27 seems. I dunno. Death is just such a waste.

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Amy Winehouse, the singer and
songwriter, died in July after drinking more than five times the
legal drink-drive limit, a London inquest heard today.
A verdict of misadventure was recorded on the star, who was
aged 27, by Suzanne Greenway, St. Pancras coroner.
Winehouse had started drinking after going for three weeks
without alcohol, her personal physician told the hearing. The
night before, Dr. Christina Romete said Winehouse had been
drinking but remained coherent.
She was found with 416 milligrammes of alcohol per
decilitre of blood, a potentially fatal level and enough to
stop her breathing and send her into a coma.
Police discovered three bottles of vodka in her Camden
apartment. A post-mortem examination found that her vital organs
had been in good health and there were no traces of illegal
drugs.
Winehouse's live-in security guard Andrew Morris said she
was awake and laughing at 2 a.m. that day. When he checked on
her at 10 a.m., she appeared to be sleeping in bed. It was only at 3 p.m. that he realized she had no pulse. He called for
an ambulance.
The singer shot to fame with “Rehab,” won five Grammy
Awards and sold more than 5 million albums in her lifetime.
