It's a Sonic Youth kinda morning.

Daydream Nation and Washing Machine so far.

Aka, SY albums I like but rarely listen to. Let the good times roll!

Over the course of 3 albums the DBTs went from band-I-like to band-I-don't-care-if-I-ever-hear-again. At this point I'd rather listen to the Eagles.

Drive-By Truckers is one of those (very rare) bands which are all about the lyrics for me. If the story presented in the song interests me (see: Used To Be A Cop, Days of Graduation) I can listen to it all day. Otherwise it is bland and boring.

I no longer own any DBT albums and I'm quite OK with that.

No you don't. (see: Desperado)

I'll agree that the quality has certainly diminished but they're still capable of greatness live. I feel like they should get out of the South and cut a harder edged record. They've been spending too much time trying to emulate "that Muscle Shoals sound".

Just go all out Stones and record in Jamaica or some shit.

Yeah, that Eagles jab was a tad hasty.

I like your Jamaica angle, though.

The Big To Do was their best record since Dirty South. I feel I should also mention that the last dance at my wedding reception was "Everybody Needs Love" off of Go Go Boots (Eddie Hinton cover).

This explains perfectly why they bore the fuck out of me.

With the exception of the Shona songs all of the albums between Dirty South and Go Go Boots started out as disappointments and then ended up growing on me to varying degrees. Go Go Boots though is either a steaming pile of turds or is just taking a helluva lot longer to grow.

Also, FWIW, I'll take a flyer on just about any old Muscle Shoals cat but the two Eddie Hinton albums I have are pretty boring.

And I think I would rather listen to the Eagles than Go Go Boots.

I can agree with this. Although admittedly I've listened to it in full less than a handful of times. Not all the Shonna songs have been bad.

Its been 6 mos. since GGB came out, and I decided to check in on it as well--since my attention has turned to other 2011, etc releases.

I still really like it, and maybe that's because I've seen so much of it live. It was definitely a coming out party for Jay Gonzalez, whose keys are a great anchor in the mix, adding a new element of soul to this band. Neff's pedal steel on Dancin' Ricky are superb, and even though its a Shonna song, it doesn't seem as much with her voice actually being perfectly cast for that song. If it was sung by anyone with a polished voice, it'd completely lose its heartbreak and back of a smoky bar vibe. Cartoon Gold is a track that just kinda comes out of left-field and seems absolutely like a skip until you get sucked into Cooley's lyrics, 'Jesus made the flowers, but it took a dog to make the story good'. Ray's Automatic Weapon in my opinion is one of Patterson's best written songs. I know it doesn't have the rock element to back it, which probably will exclude it from a lot of "best of" lists in their canon, but it really is a landmark on the record. I loved both Eddie Hinton covers on the record, but I'm over them. Live, Everyone Needs Love is fun as a sing-a-long, but it kinda bums me that its the song that ultimately this record will be most remembered for.

I could go on, but you see where I'm going. Sure, I'm an unabashed fan-boy of the band but this record isn't a throwaway by any means. Its the most chill the band has been, in yet features some of the most brutal songs. I don't think its going to be my number 1 of the year, but it definitely is going to place somewhere in the 25.

Fats Waller: Favorites

Really nice 78 album with 4 records, 8 songs. Includes lots of big hits. Complete listing is: Honeysuckle Rose, Your Feet's Too Big, Aint Misbehavin', Hold Tight (Want Some Sea Food Mama), I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby, The Joint Is Jumpin', Two Sleepy People, and The Minor Drag. The records are all in pretty nice condition and are making me late for work while I finish up listening...last record's about to drop now. Yup, old 78 player is back in business, so I'll be dragging out a few stacks of old things like this for a while now.

It features dense, jaggedly careening electronic rock laced with industrial heaviness, post-punk serration, and proggy pretenses, as if TV on the Radio, Einstürzende Neubauten, PiL, and the Mars Volta had formed a Voltron-like juggernaut. Also like TVOTR, the music internally combusts with some kind of demonic conviction. Opener "When Everything is in its Place" sets a hulking, gothic synthesizer atop a foundation of echoing thwacks, and the tension between engulfing leads and baroquely bruising percussion hardly relents for the entire album. Dave harnesses his concussive beats, blatting synths, air-raid sirens, and growling guitar chords into a dyspeptic, thrillingly overbearing force. Softer touches like the shivering harpsichord of "SumR" and the warmly blurred new wave of "Oil" are the exceptions accentuating the rule.

He mentions Liars is an influence and I can definitely hear it and somewhat the aforementioned TV on the Radio.
