okay, I think I get an idea of the problem here... I must say I didn't now anything about cole porter but he "appears" in the latest woody allen film and I actually didn't know that there seem to be no "original" recordings. that makes it a bit more complicated because now my question would be: what's the best recordings of porter songs and who has some of those in a digital, shareable format?

The board's dynamics have definitely changed though--once upon a time I wrote about my listening to Scott Joplin, at which point a bunch of people hassled my music choice. Now we're having threads about Cole Porter, and which "Fats" was the best.

*edit* and apparently it was you, who ragged (pun intended) on me:

Porter wrote songs, not recorded them. While some of his songs (melodies and lyrics) were some of the finest in 20th century popular music. His voice pretty much sucked bad; you'd never want an introduction to his songs by hearing him sing them. I'd suggest Sinatra or the two volumes of the Ella Fitzgerald Cole Porter Songbook. The point of the great "standards" weren't the quality of the composer's voice, but giving great singers something to interpretL Fitzfgerald, Nina Simone, and Annie Lennox... all very, very different. How strange the change from major to minor...

And something cool has vanished from culture... cocktails and cufflinks and discreet fucking women with seams on silk stockings. Mostly built on the platform of privilege and wealth... but even privilege now is more brutal and mundane, flattened and boring. I listened to Cole Porter much more in college than now. Has nothing to do with age.

great, that's what I wanted! thank you very much.

harry, cool post. are you any interested in woody allen? that film, midnight in paris, actually focuses on peoples image of culture and lifestyle in earlier decades.
