So my wife is volunteering at a charity event, and of course volunteered my services to provide music. The theme of the event is Mardi Gras/New Orleans stuff.

Feel free to recommend and/or upload songs, artists, albums that would fit the theme. I'm thinking I want to do two mixes - old stuff and more modern stuff.

Any and all help appreciated.

I think we had a similar thread some time ago.

7 Walkers has some good NOLA-flavored tunes. "Sue from Bogalusa" and "New Orleans Crawl" from their debut are quality.

also check out Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Meters, Galactic, Rebirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Red Stick Ramblers, Buckwheat Zydeco, Beau Soleil avec Michael Ducet, The Subdudes, The Radiators.

reference this radio station: http://www.wwoz.org/

billyg will be helpful here as well.

Look for these comps and lean heavily on them:

and then mix in more zydeco from anyone with the last name Ardoin or Dopsie or Balfa.

Stu's recommendations are appropriate (other than maybe 7 Walkers) although I don't much care for Galatic or the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Also don't forget Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong, Eddie Bo, the Neville Brothers and the Wild Magnolias.

Not sure it helps, but I've been getting into Fats Domino lately.

The new Rebirth Brass Band album is fucking great. Also, the last Trombone Shorty album is awesome (new one totally disappointing).

Classics: The Meters, Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, The Radiators

Newer: The Iguanas, Rebirth, Trombone Shorty, Hot 8 Brass Band.

Zydeco - Geno Delafose and French Rockin Boogie. I have no idea if these guys even have recorded music but at Jazzfest this year they absolutely played quintessential Zydeco, good time, feel good music. Get a whole album.

"New Orleans music" is kind of a wide net. All of it is good though. I may never miss another Jazz Fest.

Also really liking the Beau Soleil. And the Red Stick Ramblers.

Also on that funk comp was "Hook and Sling" by Eddie Bo which I always knew from the DJ Qbert mix. I had never heard the original until now.
