I second the Beck, I also think Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy and Bill Callahan work well.

Sea Change makes me feel absolutely nothing. Numbing, soporific album.

another vote for sea change here. i've also found myself listening to a lot of nick cave, black heart procession and leonard cohen (songs of love and hate) in times of more or less heartbreak.

I usually reach for songs rather than artists for this type of thing. I mean, even Joy Division had upbeat sounding songs on their albums.
