Let's say someone goes through some heartbreak and wants music to match. What would you guys (gods of music that all'y'all are) recommend?

I've used Starsailor's Love Is Here album, but I'm sure there are other beautiful options...?

I second the Beck, I also think Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy and Bill Callahan work well.

Sea Change makes me feel absolutely nothing. Numbing, soporific album.

Any Modest Mouse album up till good news. When my room mate in college found out his girlfriend was cheating on him this is all he listened to for about a month.

another vote for sea change here. i've also found myself listening to a lot of nick cave, black heart procession and leonard cohen (songs of love and hate) in times of more or less heartbreak.

Good call on E. Smith.

I usually reach for songs rather than artists for this type of thing. I mean, even Joy Division had upbeat sounding songs on their albums.

Couple that come to mind (if we're talking about a woman):

The Ending - Bobby Bare Jr.
If You See Her, Say Hello - Bob Dylan

For pure desperation:

How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead

Yeah lot's of his early work, but it is more weepy, juvenile and often just flat out whiny.

that new Snowden ep was sorta depressing.

Hayden usually does the trick.

Without a doubt, the one I continue to go to in those moment:

1. Red House Painters - Songs for a Blue Guitar

Others:

2. Red House Painters - Mistress

3. Red House Painters - All Mixed Up

4. Sun Kil Moon - Glenn Tipton (though it's only the last set of lyrics in that song that do it for me)

5. Damien Rice - Delicate

6. Will Oldham/Bonnie 'prince' Billy - I Am Drinking Again

Those tend to help me wallow.

Nice, reminded me of this one.

I can't think of a song that better fits this thread then this one.
