Caught them at The Mohawk in Austin last night. I don't know what I was expecting, being that I like a lot of revivalists in theory more than in practice.
Anyhow, I haven't checked out their recordings, but live, they slayed, and the frontman alone is worth the price of admission. Guitarist, keys, bassist, and drummer all sang incredibly tight harmony. There is no way on earth a band that talented could release anything other than a great album, right?
At least that what I'm hoping for, because live, they didn't succumb to the usual pitfalls of the genre. The sings were short to acceptable length, with minimal jamming, and they had a lean and focused sense of purpose to their set. I'm going to have to go and get that new album on Bloodshot. That's another thing, what are they doing on Bloodshot? I hope they don't get lost over there, but then again, maybe they won't because they're such an atypical act for the label.
Anyhow, GO SEE THEM.
