No idea what stores give for CDs anymore and I did let my ex take whatever she wanted when we split up before packing 'em up and leaving them in the basement for a few years. Finally decided there is no point in hanging on to them for me so I'm planning on trading them in and trying for store credit to pick up some vinyl. Have about 5 computer paper boxes full. Hoping to get a decent stack of vinyl for this.

Anyone trade in CDs lately? They still giving much of anything or am I looking at a quarter each or some such thing? Hell, if I could get a buck each, I'd be happy to bring that much back home on the vinyl side.

That would make for a hell of a vinyl shopping trip.

I couldn't do it.
I like the portability of my CDs -- combined with the physical format.
Listening to my iTunes now and, I tell you, it just isn't the same.

I hear ya. But I've been first iPod and then cloud streaming for about 3 years now and don't miss the Cds one bit. I can't imagine gettin grid of my vinyl and that collection is only gonna grow but I just don't have the emotional connection to the CDs.

The biggest change I've noticed from record stores over the past five years is that they are smarter and more discriminate about what they'll buy in general. It used to be I could dump anything even if I didn't get much for the weaker stuff. Now, stores just won't even bother taking stuff that they don't think they can turn around reasonably quick. Also, they seem to realize what's rare and oop and customers will pay more for more now than they did in the past. As a buyer, it's much harder to just stumble across a real find for cheap but maybe as a seller you might get more for rarities. I don't know. I rarely buy anything that I don't like anymore and I'm down to a big box of crap that I'd have a hard time selling so I haven't even tried to trade anything in a year or two. Good luck though.

It's getting rough out there...
Online spots like spun.com or secondspin.com don't give anything close to what they use to...
and local stores I use to dump at offer 25 cents to 75 cents per depending on the title....
long gone are the days when i got 3-4 bux per cd...

i have about 200 i am trying to unload, and i simply hate the fact i may have to settle on em...
half.com and ebay.com are your best options if you are not in a big rush to part with them, and have space to hold em for now.

I don't have first-hand knowledge, as I myself haven't sold for several years. But I'm not surprised by Twilightkid's assessment. I'm guessing a lot of the 20/30-something former-cd-buyers are now digitizing their collection and selling off the physical copies. At the same time, less people are buying physical product and relying on downloads. So these used stores are (probably) experiencing more people selling and less people buying... which basically means they can't buy for as high a price.

Twilight is right--if you have the time/patience, try unloading the major things via eBay/Amazon/half. The other option would be to do a Craigslist lot... something along the lines of "500 indie/rock/classic CDs $XXX.XX" or whatever. You might get a buyer that way.

Yeah, I kind of fear I am at the bottom of the CD sales market right now in the great digital dump. But really I just want to get rid of them and get whatever I can, if that's not much I'm not too worried. No way am I willing to go through the time/effort of selling them online myself. The trips to the post office alone would drive me crazy there.

i sold all of my cd's on secondspin over the past few months. big procedure, but i was able to make a couple thousand bucks. i'd guess i averaged about 2-3 bucks per cd that i actually sold. they only pay 5cents for some...i just scrapped those. a lot went in the 1-3 range with a few getting up into the 7-12 range as well (box set do well; also things that are more commercially popular do well also)

i ended up giving quite a few away to goodwill or friends that second spin didnt want/scuffed/broken jewel case. it was also interesting to go back through all that crap and see that i had a couple dozen cds that someone i had never loaded onto my external hard drive. also quite a few old cds i forgot i even had.

Where you at? I was planning on going to Vintage Vinyl here. I think there are a few unaffiliated places around the country with that name. You're not in St. Louis are ya?

Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ. They have been in business for at least 25 plus years... www.vvinyl.com I don't think they are affiliated with any other locations.

Insane Metal section. Best record store I have encountered on the east coast in my time. makes me not miss visiting Amoeba; kinda... Amoeba is an experience beyond shopping....V V is more of a simple large record store...

You can also check sites like abundatrade.com and entertainmentbuyback.com. They tell you what they will pay. I've sold shit to both, some good prices. If they only offer ten cents it's not worth the postage. At least one of those sites will pay for the shipping if you send them enough. Would be more time consuming but you'd probably get more than 50 cents each and not hardly as bad as selling them individually online.

I think Half Price Books will give you between $1 and $2 each. They usually sell them for double what they take in. I was just there last weekend and most of their discs are $4 with a pretty healthy sized $2 bin.

The problem with selling them online is you have to spend a ton of time writing up the shipping labels and using stamps. (It's worth it in my opinion to get probably double what you would get dumping them somewhere, but it will take awhile and some may sit there online for years as other people undercut your posted price.)

I've been wanting to unload about 1,200 of my 1,500 discs, but I haven't been able to bring myself to doing it. It doesn't seem worth it to get $2K for all the discs that I probably spent $10K on, but it would be nice to clear out some credit card debt.

I've sent out plenty for baseball, football, and march madness over the past 10 years.
