The Coctails
(Also known as Archer Prewitt's first band)

They released elclectic albums that ranged from lounge jazz to children's songs, to indie pop. And live, they were a helluva lot of fun: everybody in the band played multiple instruments and they all switched and bounded around the stage to play (ahem) MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS (like Musical Chairs) between just about every song.

Loved them and miss them.

If you do not know them, do yourself a favor and get something. I recommend:
Here Now Today
and
Peel

No, they do not have a new album.
They broke up in 1996 or so, reuniting only for a one-time gig at the Lounge Ax (Chicago) for its final night.

Not indie as such, but I'll say Handsome, post-hardcore/alt-metal featuring former members of Helmet, Murphy's Law, the Cro-Mags, and Quicksand. Lead singer Jeremy Chatelain went to play bass for Jets to Brazil.

Like Oomalama. Talk of them suddenly shifts to the Vaselines more often than not.

Anything with Lanegan gets respect... 'cause it deserves it. "Nearly Lost You" was a great single.

the screaming trees "uncle anasthesia" is one of my favorite records, and i rarely see it get any props from the indie community [quite surprising]. lanegan in top form on that album.

I saw them on that tour (Philly, Electric Factory). They were OK, but I like the album loads.

Not so 'indie', but I sure do miss Eric's Trip and Red Red Meat. I was a sucker for most anything sub pop back in the early 90s.

Uncle Anesthesia, Sweet Oblivion and Dust are alll real good. As far as their stuff before that I'd stick with the SST comp.

Whoops!
I just went to Pitchfork (where I haven't been in quite some time) and it appears the The Coctails DO have a new release out -- a box set!

(Man, what is it with all these obscure, Chicago-based Indie bands getting their own box sets these days? First Shrimp Boat, and now The Coctails? Must be some sort of Sea & Cake conspiracy.)

Yep. All those vinyl acts that never sold squat, were only around on labels like SST and Thirsty Ear for a short time, broke up and that was the end of it.
