What an incredible read this mag is. In depth articles on each band on the CD. If you're hoping to hear new wave or metal, you won't dig this. But are you into some Mississippi blues or "funky housewife disco? Soul music from an underrated genius? Check. Seventeen-piece all-babe big band? Check. Lonesome Sun Records–approved hillbilly? Check. This year's OA CD includes those sounds, plus: jazz, gospel, New Wave, garage rock, 1950s pop—and much more."

I would have paid the $12 cover price for the cover of the mag alone.

In fact, the new Music Issue may surprise people who believe that Mississippi boasts only blues music. Though rightly regarded for its fantastically rich blues heritage, Mississippi can also claim the birthplace of rock & roll (Tupelo, Miss., where Elvis Presley was born) and country (Meridian, Miss., where Jimmie Rodgers, "The Father of Country Music," was born).

But, of course, even those genres don't cover it all.

Want funky housewife disco? We've got it. Soul music from an underrated genius? Check. Seventeen-piece all-babe big band? Check. Lonesome Sun Records–approved hillbilly? Check. This year's OA CD includes those sounds, plus: jazz, gospel, New Wave, garage rock, 1950s pop—and much more.

Beyond the tunes, there is the text, and this year's Oxford American Southern Music Issue is no different than its 12 predecessors in attracting some of the world's most scintillating music writers to contribute. To wit:

* The nuanced and thorough Peter Guralnick on Sam Phillips's greatest musical discovery (Elvis? Jerry Lee Lewis? Johnny Cash? See our cover for the answer)

* The controversial but stylish Elijah Wald on the x-rated origins of blues lyrics

* The sublime Cynthia Shearer on her former mentor Barry Hannah's most personal mixtape

* The stupendous William Gay on one of his all-time favorite artists, Mississippi John Hurt

PLUS: A special section of The OA featuring lists and musings by a shapely medley of provocateurs, including Roy Blount, Jr., Nick Hornby, and Rosanne Cash, to name just a few.

I do subscribe. The annual music magazine is the best but if you're going to buy that issue it's worth it to pay the extra $10-15 or whatever it is and subscribe.

Sorry, should have included that info, I guess. But I figured everyone would DL from my link, and that would tell them the bands. :wanker:

Here's a listing, and you can also sample the music: http://www.oxfordamerican.org/articles/ ... listening/

I subscribed for a year and the only issue I read a single full article in was the Music Issue. I appreciate what they're doing, but it's not something I like enough to actively participate in, I guess.

Sounds like the year I subscribed to the New Yorker. Read a select few articles and movie/album reviews but didn't even come close to reading a fraction of it.

I appreciate that they exist if I'm so inclined to get an issue but even with a rag like Rolling Stone (which I still get) I'll probably only read the political article, the main interview if it's someone I half care about, a quick peruse of the reviews and maybe a Peter Travers screed.

Magazines are such a passive medium for me but I can't stop subscribing. Guess I just like stuff coming to the house.

I've got that problem too of subscribing to a lot more things than I have time to read. I do still find the time to read the ones I like though even if I fall 6-8 months behind at a time and then make a concerted effort to at least catch up to the season (spring/summer/fall/winter) that we're in. I end up having to read nothing but magazines for 6 weeks or so while I'm catching up and I always have one at hand, reading an article or two over lunch, a few paragraphs while stuck at a stoplight, etc.

It took me a good three months to read last year's Oxford music magazine but I don't think I skipped or didn't finish a single article. I've only read one other issue from the last year but I only skipped a couple of articles and I'm maybe 20% into the third issue. It's a good magazine though and it scratches an itch that nothing else really can. I just wish I had more time to read so crap didn't pile up so much.

I almost asked my sister for a gift subscription to Wine Spector for christmas before I came to my senses and realized that I was nuts for even thinking about adding to the pile.
